Any tips on how to get started cooking your own rom?

I tried Google for this but I would like to know what tools modaco developers use for cooking.

I tried making roms for winmo but now i am an android boy and all this desire froyo official release talk has got me excited! :)

How did you fine devs learn?

Any tips on how to get started cooking your own rom's?

Or any links to good guides would be helpful too!

I tried myself to do it (that's why I knew where to look at), but except from copying ROMs of other and adding bootanimations or simple things like that, I've been unable to customize it the way I wanted to (super circle battery + working A2SD + my favourite apps)....It's seems to be a bit more complicated than I thought..........let me know if you manage to do a stable ROM......
