Portman Lag Fix Thanks and a question or two

First of all, many thanks to Portman and anyone else who worked on his fix (if they did!)

I applied it by following the instructions on the sticky here, and it seems to work really well, my Quadrant went from 800 something to 2233, and day to day stuff looks much quicker, as quick as or quicker than my iPhone 4, which I am currently trying to get my SGS to replace as my only phone.

So, I have a nice fast machine, and would like to keep it that way, and am still quite a newbie to these Android devices, and I have a few questions, that i felt were better in a new thread as they are not directly related to the actual application of the fix. I do intend to do my take on the actual application later today as I still had to change a couple of things and did not find it that easy TBH.

OK, questions,

1. Can I somehow back the SGS up so that if I mess something up playing, I can get back to this state including the lag fix without having to type it line by line again (I know of the one click fixes but prefer to do it line by line)

2. Is there any other way than Quadrant (and feel!) to know if fix is still present after a reboot?

3. What exactly will "kill" this speed up fix, a reboot clearly not, but am not clear all the different levels of flashing on SGS?

Thanks

Kev

Get ClockWork Rom Manager and Titanium Backup.

Titanium will backup all your apps and settings only.

Clockwork will let you make a nandroid backup, which is basically a full disk image of your phone's internal ROM space (not the internal or external sdcard spaces). THIS IS A MUST, in my opinion, for anyone messing around with ROMs and especially some of these unix command line hacks we're doing.

I also occasionally use rsync to backup my sdcard stuff to my DrobBox account.

Use the mount command in the terminal and look for /dev/loop0 to see if the fix is in place if you want.

Anything that replaces the userinit or playlogos replacement will break this.

Thanks, so if I use Clockwork to back up phone as it is now, I can always restore exactly as it?

I have Titanium already, but it seems there is no "backup all apps and settings" button or am I missing something?

Yes, clockwork will, in theory, make a complete backup of the entire phone and allow you to restore it to its current state. Make sure you always have the update.zip that starts clockwork recovery in the root of your INTERNAL sdcard before starting anything. You can then boot to the phone's recovery, select run update, and the phone will then start in clockwork. From there, you can restore a recent backup and in 99.9% of cases get back to where you were.

Backup all apps and settings is there under Backup/Restore, then hit menu, then batch. This MIGHT be a paid version only feature. It's worth the price of the app if you don't have the paid app. You can get a free license for the paid version and some other goodies if you support the forum here by becoming a paid member.
