Guest i0an Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Maybe because you didn't made a full wipe before flash it. thank you! it works!
Guest DragosP Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 I have R8 with A2SD+. I would like to take a backup before trying R9 and I have couple of questions: 1. Do I need a wipe before flashing R9? 2. What's the best nandroid backup option? - ROM+ext (I have Amon RA) - or ROM+titanium (apps+system settings) 3. What's the average size of a nandroid backup with R8? Thank you. 1.No. 2.Usually both. 3.Hundreds ok megs. thank you! it works! Cu placere.
Guest wcymodaco Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 this is a community forum, fixes are provided by the community. Why are you so insistent that Paul himself answers your question? You might try being less flippant with your responses/posts if you want help I did pay 10 GBP to use custom ROMs made by him. Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "fixes are provided by the community". As far as I can tell, fixes to the ROM are provided by Paul in the online kitchen. Community members use the forum to help and guide fellow members who have problems using the ROM but it is strange that my question to Paul is ignored. In any case, if you had read properly I did not necessarily ask for Paul to answer directly but I did ask someone who had done a wipe and install of new R8 to give me some feedback re the maps issue. I never got a reply to this question but got other replies instead. I'm not even asking for technical support, just a yes or no answer from him. I do not think my request was unreasonable considering I paid a sum of money for use of the product. My guess is many other people who paid to use the online kitchen would share the same view as me. My 2 cents.
Guest the_hand Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 I've just installed the default option and the device seems to enter an infinte loop at the startup screen with the modaco and the animated htc logos. It refreshes this screen every 10 seconds or so. Anyone has a clue what might be going on? Thanks,
Guest wcymodaco Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 (edited) You ever tried? I do, and not once, and I had no problem. You can run "Restore missing apps with data". Yes I have tried. I have a few issues with wiping and reinstalling. Some of them are: - Important stock trading J2ME applications cannot be reinstalled using titanium backup for security reasons. So, I have to reinstall JAD/JAR file and request for new activation code each time I wipe the phone and reinstall apps. - I will always have freezes on reinstalls. To reinstall everything properly, I have to reboot the phone more than 5 times over the course of reinstall. - With launcherpro, widgets, especially scrollable widgets cannot be reinstalled using titanium - HTC apps such as "Stocks", the ticker symbol data go missing and do not seem to be backed up properly by titanium. So on every wipe, I would have to manually rekey a bunch of ticker symbols. It's a pain and a waste of time. etc etc .... So, for me, reinstalling apps and data using titanium is not as smooth and simple as you have described it. It is a time consuming process. Edited September 18, 2010 by wcymodaco
Guest Jaideep123 Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 Hi there, I am yet another new person to all this. Earlier today, I rooted my phone and flashed it with your r6 riskfree rooting guide, which worked fine. I am now trying to flash the r8 from this thread (forgive the clumsy terminology if I'm using it wrongly). I think I understand your installation instructions, but at no point do I get the option to perform a nandroid back-up. I can get into recovery mode, but as soon as I do, the white htc boot-up screen appears for a few seconds before getting the black screen with the red warning triangle. (From there, holding the vol up button and the power button gets me to a blue screen with "Android system recovery <2e> at the top. I have four options - Reboot system now, Apply sdcard:update.zip (which I have also tried but it aborts with the text "Finding update package...\Opening update package...Verifying update package...E:signature verification failed Installation aborted). Whether Iapply sdcard:update.zip or not, there is some text in yellow underneath all the options n blue that says "E: Can't open /cache/recovery.command".) So, my basic problem is this - I have downloaded the zip file, put it on the root directory in the sdcard (and renamed it to update.zip) and tried to follow your instructions, but I never got the to point where I am offered the option of making a nandroid back-up. Am I being completely useless and naive (I am in no way a programmer, but I think of myself as quite computer-literate and techno-friendly)? Thanks.
Guest fireblade84 Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 it appears an ota update 2.10.405 Oo

Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "fixes are provided by the community". .... My 2 cents. Why you don't ask a full refund? When you have paid £ 10 you paid mostly for the opportunity to customize your ROM. NOT for a direct line with Paul or someone else.

Doing a full wipe/factory reset in the recovery did the trick. That might be working for you too.
Guest faceN Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 Requirements In order to use this ROM on your device, you must be rooted and be able to launch the custom recovery image using the supplied scripts in the root package. You can read more about how to root and launch the CRI on your device in this topic. Hello! As a newbie wanting to root my HTC Desire I started following this post but I stumbled on the very first step - the provided link to rooting and CRI guide does not work (it links to the news page). Could you please fix this so I can continue with the daunting enough process as it is  Thanks!
Guest the_hand Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 Same thing happened to me after coming from another ROM. Doing a full wipe/factory reset in the recovery did the trick. That might be working for you too. Yes it did. The other thing was that the camera view was really fuzzy. It had nothing to do with the focus. Then I upgraded to R9 and now it seems to be fine again. The 720p video is nothing near the 30fps rate. It seems to be only 10-15 fps. Still, it is good to know that there is a higher resolution option there.
Guest jfran Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 Goodmorning, Is it possible to open the zip and delete the HTC Lockscreen ( i hate it) and then flash the rom. I thought i use my friend google but gives me not the awnser i'm looking for. Now i tried to erase the htclockscreen.apk using rootexplore in r/w mode but still after reboot the d..n thing is still there. Are there any other options to get this thing of my Desire. Using the r8 modaco with ap2sd. Grtz Dademir 2 optinos first using ADB commands to mount and remove the file when in recovery or the easier version would be to remove the apk and then flash the zip file using clockwork fakeflash! rgds

Guest BashyUK Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Hi, Last week I downloaded a pre-baked ROM and all was fine. Today I paid subs fee and got access to the kithen and baked my own version...all is still fine apart from I have a contacts icon as well as people and 2 phone icons as per screenshots. I'm sure I didn't select any Google contacts/phone options...any ideas? Great work btw, looking fwd to r9. UPDATE 20/09: I falshed r9 last night and restored only certain items, now only have 1 of each phone and people so was probably my doing by restoring all data from the pre-baked version I flashed first.
Guest zombiefly Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 My entire 'conversation' with you has been totally unproductive and unconstructive. I will not post any further reply. Thank you. i think you should look at how your posts on this thread differ from others... you've not helped yourself in your approach by demanding answers from Paul. All the answers/procedures are documented on these forums and I urge ANY new user reading this and thinking of rooting to first spend some time READING about what you are about to do. You need to have a decent understanding of what it is you are doing to your phone or else you'll find yourself in a mess. With a little understanding, you'll be better able to troubleshoot your issues and find answers to your problems. Please people READ ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO to your phone and UNDERSTAND what you are doing. If you don't get it, you probably shouldn't be doing this yourself. This is why the phone is provided to you in a locked down state, so you can be supported by your carrier. As stated in a previous post, you've paid for access to the forums and the kitchen, NOT to exclusive support from Paul. Regarding your issue, i've never seen the issue you have in the last 3yrs of rooting phones so I can't be much more help than pointing you at some posts. Try searching xda for further info.
Guest algoholic Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Hello, I've baked my version, downloaded over night and uploaded to the SD, but cannot install it with the ROM manager nor the hboot, where is the updated relevant link (for stupid users) of howto make the actual new ROM install work? my device is rooted, if I need any further files (radio, special .bat files for unique rooting, partioning for a2sd+ or else) please link to them too as I'm kinda lost here, should I change the zip file to update.zip? tried and it didn't work... Thanks for the help, I'm in crave for some frozen yogurt

Thanks for the help, I'm in crave for some frozen yogurt  Did you root using Unrevoked? If so, you will have had Clockwork Mod installed so should be able to boot into the recovery menu (hold power down whilst powering on), select to update from sdcard and just select the rom, no need to call it update, keep the same name. Did you sign the ROM as you don't need to do so with Clockwork Mod although I don't know what signing it would do in negative terms... If that doesn't work, update ROM Manager, select the 'fix permissions' option from within it and try again. More detail on the errors received would be needed if the above steps don't work, as no matter the experience, people can't help if you just say it doesn't work. Also, my final piece of advice would be if it's the first time you're modding I'd suggest using pre-baked versions until you're more comfortable with the whole process before baking. Final, final advice...Stick with it, you'll never look back at stock again. Stock..spit! Let your network provide the coverage only, leave them to people who don't know their smart from their phone...and iFail owners :)

When trying to fix permissions on the Rom manager i get "An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!" Guest algoholic Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 (edited) OK, got it at unrevoked.com (3), updated hboot for windows, ran this and now I see Modaco.com and Logo just below the quietly brilliant slogan  Thanks for the help, wsn't that hard... one magic word... unrevoked **update: Celebrations were too early, unrevoked seems OK but the My Rom Pie is sour - gmail, market and other shortcuts lead to home - camera and camcorder can't record (can't understand if a2sd+ is good to go or bad) Will try and cook something tastier tomorrow morning, any recommended recipes? BashyUK, I've already looked up Unrevoked among other rooting methods but could not decide which route to take... Will try soon, thanks for clearing things up for me! The main reason for rooting for me is the Desire's small memory. Can you suggest a ROM I should use for max reliability? And should I choose A2SD or A2SD+ or is there a better method to move apps to SD? Cheers!

If memory is the main reason then you've definitely made the right choice in rooting and more so using unrevoked because of It's simplicity As for which of the two methods each has It's supporters so I'd read around on here but in particular the xda developers forum and then decide. I went for + purely based on it being the newer method. Works great for me, have 100+ mb free when it was 7! As for which ROM, well if you want to still play around with Sense and have a stable ROM then this thread is the one. If you want Sense but are willing to take a risk use r9 wip. If you really want a different experience look at Cyanogen although I haven't personally... am not much newer to the scene than yourself.

Thanks To check if a2sd+ is good, dl quick system info from the market and see if anything is reported in the relevant section. If not It's not good. If It's not good make sure you partitioned as required. If you didn't partition then let ROM manager do it for you. There is plenty of info around the site on this. I'd use pre baked if I was you before cooking. Then do some more research and cook once you've figured the basics. Enjoy.
