Guest BigBearMDC Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 I wonder something ... the kernel says swap is enabled and used. But EStrong Task Manager still shows only ~40MB free. Is it just ignoring SWAP?
Guest starkos Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Is that because the kernel didn't allow "real" swap? My questions related to the performance issues of compcache vs. swap are sincere, not a criticism. I'm trying to understand why it's better. I would be interested in an answer to this as well - a few places I've been reading have suggested that compcache is more favourable to swap, also I think quite a few roms (cyanogenmod?) have swap disabled...?
Guest D-D- Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 (edited) a better idea is to have 24-32 mb of compcache, or writing the appropriate userinit scripts to have compcache/swap combined. I guess... I not sure if that's what gets best results on android, I haven't read anywhere that anyone would use a swap partition that large. Most common seems to be 10, 24, 32, 40, 60 and there about, never in the 200's lol? Well none will know this for sure, cause everybody has different taste. And it's always recommended to use a CLASS 6 card, cause only on that card u get better results. Android is built in that way so u can have 3-4 apps active atm. On our device due to lack of ram and huawei special way of programming this (don't know how) we can barely have 1 app in the memory. I'm killing lots of huaweis com. apps with the advanced task killer and get usable phone (ignored the message, bluetooth and alarm) with 40-50 mb ram constatly. I don't really know why these apps are needed, but when they are needed, they start again. I missed the point a little :P Anyway, the point is, with swap, the kernel should automaticly know which app should be held in virtual memory and which in our RAM. (at least that's what I think and read) Edit: (the real point) the apps that aren't used much (the ones i kill) will be used on swap and switched when needed. Cause the system takes so much ram, the apps we run can be placed on swap and have true multitasking and not the one we have - killing the app and making just a link for calling the app when needed. Is it just ignoring SWAP? Could you just not open one app after another and check free again and see if it's getting used up?
Guest DanWilson Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 It looks like this kernel has usb gadget support which means we could eventually port PSFreedom to our Pulse :P Can we get USB Host. SWAP. Multi-Touch in 2 point recognition. Overclocking. .32 Kernel. and EPIC FROYO-ISM!?!?! Pretty Please?

Is it just ignoring SWAP? It will, swap is swap not ram, top or free would be better to see if any gets used when you have opened a few apps.

Guest BigBearMDC Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Yes to all questions asked :P And yeah, top and free show the SWAP partition and even that it is used. I can't really test it though as the Pulse reboots when I try to turn on WiFi =/
Guest Stevos Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Yes to all questions asked :P What's the deal with the cheese dispenser then? I guess as standard it would be mild cheddar, but I'm hoping for a patch to parmesan.

Guest Totyasrác Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Yes to all questions asked :P And yeah, top and free show the SWAP partition and even that it is used. Excellent, Mr. BoBo :) I can't really test it though as the Pulse reboots when I try to turn on WiFi =/ Then DON'T turn wifi on :(

If a cheese dispenser is included, I'll pass on this kernel. @BigBear (Didn't decide to quote you for some reason :) ) Were you serious about USB Host and Overclock? And 2 Point Multi-Touch? Damn dawg, you got a lot to do! ETA by chance? :P
Guest TGWS Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Thiss is what i like to hear, T-mobile co-operating with us and giving us this stuff :P Do what you guy's do. And Thankyou so much for everything you've done for me, Help, Custom Rom's and everything <3
Guest scoobydoo99 Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 LOL, stunned at this latest development - I eventually plucked up the courage yesterday to upgrade from T Mob 2.1 to the FLB 1.5 and now there'll be another rom ready in days by the sound of the things. Hat's off to fibble, the FLB 1.5 with apps2sd is very impressive, stable, smooth and fast.
Guest Simon O Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 With no disrespect to all the amazing people busting their a$$ off for the Pulse 24/7 but shouldn't we poke Paul about this? He will surely do this in a jiffy. Cheers! EDIT: Ooooor maybe Tom will hack this even faster :P Paul doesn't care about the Pulse any more.
Guest JimJam707 Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Paul doesn't care about the Pulse any more. :P
Guest igor_anta Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Paul doesn't care about the Pulse any more. That's too bad, more so that the Pulse is the most (or the second most) popular phone here. But I'm sure you and the other knowledgeable chaps will do the Pulse justice :P Do you plan to update FLB MOD 1 with a new swap and compcache enabled kernel? Maybe even OC?
Guest Totyasrác Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Paul doesn't care about the Pulse any more. According to his signature: "Devices i'm currently working on releases for: Desire, Galaxy S, Streak Devices currently paused and next in the queue: Nexus One, Legend Devices currently on hold: Hero, Pulse, Wildfire Devices I'm not currently working on: Anything not listed above" So it's on hold - not dropped, I guess.

I still believe we could ask him to set up a Kitchen for the FroYo ROM, or just give permission to Tom G (or flib or BoBo) to supervise such a kitchen... I've already asked him about that one but there was just no answer at all...
Guest Simon O Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 I'm sure BigBear and Flibblesan will have that done before I get home from work tomorrow. Sadly I don't know how to compile kernels. Swap will effectively give more memory, so it might fix it. Compcache might be worth a try as well, but I think the more we complicate the memory setup the less reliable the device will be. Compcache would also mean less physical memory (so we will lose some of the 128MB). Compcache definitely slows the phone down (think about it.. the already slow CPU has to compress ram every time it's written). Swap is much better for us. Infact most G1 users disable compcache.
Guest Rem1x Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Paul said he was doing nothing until the 2.1 source came out :P
Guest Simon O Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 According to his signature: So it's on hold - not dropped, I guess. Maybe but he ignores any question about the Pulse that you ask him.
