I like tiles but I have always preffered the more simplistic "basic/plain" type, (and the ontacts and messaging icons look a bit "chunky" imo), but thats just preference. They are not tiles, instead they are created with minimalistic text, and by changing the system font with font changer. If you do not want to change the system font then change a different font in /system/fonts/ and make minimalistic text use that instead...
