With the standard 3 ROM on my Hero (now sold), it had 1 APN with the APN Type set to '*' (just an asterisk without the quotes).

I never tested mms messages, but I would have hoped they worked since this was the configuration set by 3.

The APN listed above works. To get mms working add duplicate settings with mms as APN type. This was mentioned earlier and it works great. For anyone on 3 do you lose service when switching to 2g, I do and it would be good to know if this is common or just my phone

This is crazy... I can send mms, can't receive one... so, settings must be OK if I can send... so, what is stopping me download???

I give up... turns out I can receive a mms sent from my wife's San Fran... but, not from my old Nokia...?? Think I'll just live with receiving some files and not others!

I also lose service when the phone switches to 2G setting the phone to WCDMA only seems to make it more reliable on 3

Are you setting it to allow allow data when roaming?

With 3, as soon as you drop to a 2G connection, you are actually roaming on Orange.

It doesn't cost you any extra, but the phone will drop the connection because it's not on it's home network.

So are the correct settings Data Roaming = Ticked and Network Mode = GSM / WCDMA auto ?

Yes, that should then allow connections whether you're on 3G or 2G.

Hmm. I don't know!

It's worked on every android phone I've ever used on 3 (Dream, Hero, Desire - of which only the Hero was supplied by 3).

It wont allow auto setting in network mode on 2g it resets to gsm only. Had a couple of reboots when trying to change,ah well thanks anyway

Does your phone switch back to Three once you are back in a 3G area? I have got to manually switch back to Three on the San Francisco.

I don't actually have a SF yet, but all the Android phones I've used on 3 have switched automatically from 3G to 2G and back again - I only get 3G in the back rooms of my house, so as I move around the house, the phone switches from 3G to 2G and back, if you see what I mean.
