Guest coronet Posted October 3, 2010 Report Posted October 3, 2010 If you've had a laggy wake/unlock screen, this is your fix! Screen unlocks instantly now! Also the phone is much more responsive. It's still buggy in an of itself, but now the phone app will not crash or slow, and should pick up a phone call instantly, and hang up the call quickly/much much quicker. This is huge. A total lifesaver! Do this today. This is absolutely essential, especially if you use the phone often.
Guest Davie1888 Posted October 3, 2010 Report Posted October 3, 2010 Could someone explain how to go about editing this, in simple terms for us newbies :) ;)
Guest OrionBG Posted October 3, 2010 Report Posted October 3, 2010 (edited) Could someone explain how to go about editing this, in simple terms for us newbies :) ;) 1. Root your device! 2. download Root Explorer from the Market. 3. start Root Explorer 4. go to /system/ and click on the R/W button on the top of the screen 5. find the "build.prop" 6. Longtap ( :( ) on the file and from the menu select "Open in text Editor" 7. find the line that says: debug.sf.hw=0 and change the "0" with "1" 8. press menu button and choose "Save and Close" 9. Close Root Explorer 10. Restart device! 11. Done :P Edited October 3, 2010 by OrionBG

Guest Blasphemous Posted October 3, 2010 Report Posted October 3, 2010 Please excuse my ignorance guys but is this 'fix' applicable to the Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade)? If so what if any risks are there and what if any are the likely benefits? Thank you in advance.
Guest Isaan Streaker Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 What if I don't want to pay £2.50 for Root Explorer? Hi - only just joined this forum but I've taken advantage of all the excellent info on here and managed to edit the build.prop file as described using File Explorer in the free edition of Android Mate from the Android Market - a bit fiddly but it worked in the end. Like previous posters, I also found that Universal Androot needs to be "fired-up" a couple of times before it performs the Rooting process - just persevere 'cause the results are worth it! Regards.
Guest homeiss Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 What if I don't want to pay £2.50 for Root Explorer? Use adb and pull the file, edit it, then push it back.
Guest sombero Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Thanks for bringing this up, made a world of difference.
Guest twe Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Didn't see much of an improvement over the modaco rom but I think its slightly smoother so thanks.
Guest Shiuko Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but it doesn't matter how many times I change it, it ends up going back to the original settings. I'm using Android mate in O2 UK 2.1 if it helps. :) Thanks in advance

The easiest way to check this is to try and copy a file to the system folder! If it is copied successfully then ok, if not than you don't have proper root rights to the system folder! Bare in mind that by default the system folder is Read Only even with Root! This is why I use Root Explorer! It have a button to mount the folder with Read/Write permission!
Guest Mirrdhyn Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) I have not bought Root Explorer to do these tweaks. I have changed my file on my computer (vim for example on Linux) and copy on my SDCard. After, I have launch a Terminal app. In your Terminal, type : $ su Accept to give a root access. To access on the system partition in read/write mode, type : # mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system To edit your build.prop with your new build.prop # cat /sdcard/build.prop > /system/build.prop Then, remount in read only : # mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system That's all :) Edited October 7, 2010 by Mirrdhyn

Glad I bought Root Explorer. After reading that lot, £2.50 was well spent!
Guest Mirrdhyn Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 Sorry for that kibcom If you have a terminal with busybox installed, you can do a lot of things :) It is a Linux after all.

All working and I've learned something. ;) Cheers
Guest Samuran Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 Hi All I did this update to my streak on tuesday night, I rooted using universal androot (as i couldnt find any info on rooting build 8105) and instantly thought "Yes this is more like it". Unfortunatley since then I have had issues daily with my phone, from becoming hugly laggy (with task managers reporting 100% cpu useage but unable to tell me what was using the %) to the phone becoming totally unusable (screen doesnt respond nor do any of the soft keys, can't turn the screen off have to take battery out etc..) So now I have changed the build.prop back and unrooted... Anyone have any ideas why this seems to make my streak fall over? I'm running Pauls 19/ Aug 2.1 Build 8105 and its a Unlocked Streak direct from Dell. Thanks in advance to anyone that is able to shed some light.. Cheers Ben
Guest kibcom Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 I'm running Pauls 19/ Aug 2.1 Build 8105 and its a Unlocked Streak direct from Dell. Perhaps that is the problem. I'm on 2.1 unofficial and I have found the phone is now 100 percent with this modification. Before the mod it was 90 per cent ok and under 1.6 the phone was only about 50 per cent usable. Apart from the phone, I can't say the mod has made any other noticeable difference to the operation or speed of my Streak under 2.1 unofficial. I'm extremely happy with my Streak. No issues whatsoever.
Guest Samuran Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 Perhaps that is the problem. I'm on 2.1 unofficial and I have found the phone is now 100 percent with this modification. Hey kibcom, what bit in particular do you think might be the problem? Which version of 2.1 unofficial are you running? Cheers Ben
Guest OrionBG Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 I'm running an r2 rom from the online kitchen here and don't have any of the problems!

Guest Samuran Posted October 9, 2010 Report Posted October 9, 2010 Ahh yeah maybe, doesnt matter now tho :) Ben
