Yes it works, I have been using it for a while. main reason for a paid app is that I spend time in areas with bad reception so a non data using satnav is a must, also networks go down sometimes and if your reliant on google your in trouble.

is the cpu up to it ?

Yeah it works, but the maps are older, and a bit out of date.

Sygic Aura is a better programme, with far better maps IMO.

Isn't the new google maps (5+) meant to cache the maps for and around your route so you're not stuck if you lose data? I haven't personally tried it so I don't know how effective it is.

yea. I'm sure you don't need data to use navigation. I've just plotted a route and turned off data and wifi. was able to scroll through the whole route (66miles). I don't think it will be able to recalculate if you go too off track though.

Thats great if your driving from A-B, but rather pain if your around B for a week or more and have to go to C,D,E,F,G,etc.

i've not tried copilot but igo myway2009 v8.42 works for me, and that has trouble even running on my gps (can't use tts) it uses so much cpu! although it seems more like amigo than igo8 to me.

can't see how anyone can use online navigation - you either lose it when hopping between wifi hotspots or pay a fortune for a data plan that you lose in rural areas.

Depends what you deam to expensive, lots of SanFran users appear to be on giffgaff. £10 gets you 250 mins, ultd text and internet.

Quite a few offline sat nav products were discussed in the Sat Nav on San Fran thread

umm...thats this thread dude?

..........edit......

just noticed posts merged...my bad

To all the posters who started a new thread about this (other than the first poster on this merged thread) ......how about using the search before starting a new thread and then asking the question IN that thread rather than start yet another thread about the same thing? Please.

I've merged all the posts this time but please look to see if a question has been asked before and if it has then post in that there, if it hasn't then feel free to start a new thread

Having been told to ask my questions about SatNav in this thread by the Moderator Team, can anyone please help?

I was asking the difference in paid for SatNav apps and the ones that come with the SF. Before the thread was closed, someone kindly mentioned about Data Transfer and the costs involved, something I know nothing about. I've never had SatNav of any kind and bought the SF hoping it would help do the job on the odd occasion I need it.

If I buy an app such as CoPilot, can anyone explain in simple terms how it works, does the phone not need to download data to know where it is? Any help at all would be most appreciated.

You just need Data to update but you can use the Maps offline with GPS.

With Google Maps you can only use your Route offline and if you want to change something you need data.

If you buy copilot or the other paid apps, the phone will not need a data connection at any time for navigation or planning. It has a gps receiver to tell it where it is.

I tried Sygic Aura and it crashes my phone. NDrive works fine and Navigon. Both use offline maps.

I am in about day 5 of the free Aura trial and it is working well on my Blade. I have always used TomTom so I find the interface a little clunky but it's cheap and does the job

I`ve been using Navdroid for a while now, best I`ve used, says street names unlike all the others I`ve tried IE: Copilot, Sygic, Ndrive & Navigon. It doesn`t have postcode search but apart from that it`s great, very fast re-routing if you go off the route your on, and it`s very cheap.

Best Wishes,

Mal

Although Navdroyd seems like a good deal, I find it quite 'amateurish'..

I have tried most of the options on the market and none of them fully meet my standards...The 2 that came closest I found was Sygic Aura and Navigon MobileNavigator...

I then settled with Navigon for my blade as Aura was a bit laggy and buggy for my taste...If Sygic ironed out the kinks in Aura I would probably go with that option..

I have had my SF since November and initially had probs with PAYG credit disappearing at a rate of sometimes £5 a day on unknown/unaccessed data activities. Orange were totally inept; offered me a refund, then denied that they had. They told me that they would with my permission disable my 3G facility. I then converted to a Monthly plan that suits my personal useage.

I would like to use (as advised by Orange shop staff) a SatNav application. I have unsuccessfully tried to load a free SatNav program. Should I be successful in finding one, can I access GPS without charge. I have a Tom Tom and have saved the files to my PC. Can these be installed and the program be ued without subscription?

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are a few apps available on the market that use maps that you store on your SD card and therefore do not require an active Internet connection to use them....

CoPilot, Sygic Aura and Navigon spring to mind...

None are free though....

Can't help with the TomTom question as I've never used one....

Once installed, they will work fine and NOT use up any Data, UNLESS you want to have stuff like Real Time Travel Alerts......

I was wondering about the same thing, is there anyway to download maps of the uk and store it on an SD card.

And which program would be the best option for these downloaded maps on the san francisco.

Preferably free but would like to know of any good paid ones as well :-)

As far as I know, most of these apps (CoPilot, Aura, Navigon etc)will require installation of maps on the SD card that you download either through the market or from the web sites of the relevant apps.

However, I don't think there is a free app that will use offline only maps....

Not tried the newest version of Google Maps yet so can't comment on whether that can be used 100% offline or if you need a connection initially for it to calculate your route.

tbh, I wouldn't touch a monthly contract on Orange with a long barge pole, and I also don't use the phone enough to justify a tenner a month on GiffGaff....

From memory, there are plenty of other threads on this subject with screenshots and user reviews of the various apps. I browsed before getting my San Fran although haven't got round to trying and deciding on a Sat Nav for it yet.....

tbh you are better off ditching orange, just unlock your phone and put a sim in from another network, I use t-mobile at £10 per month PAYG for unlimited texts/data and £10 of calls, tesco and others offer similar or better PAYG packages. I almost ported my number to orange when I bought the phone but I'm so glad I didn't as I ended up ditching them after they pinched my initial £10 credit and then failed to understand the issue (the call centre was also abroad and manned by script reading robots which I find annoying).

Sure I read something in the paper today about 3 uk doing a PAYG deal where you get up to 500mb within a month for a fiver

Just had a look but couldn't find it

Found a link talking about offline google maps but couldn't find any instructions as to how to achieve this (other than downloading your route over wifi then not deviating from it)

People have written on here about some hack of google maps that used to facilitate this kinda thing but I can't remember what it was called

Anyone got a functioning memory? Not me it seems

Sorry - that's all a bit vague and unhelpful

I probably wasn't clear enough in the previous post. Is there anyway to download all the google maps for the UK onto an SD card.

And then use those maps with the inbuilt GPS to navigate freely. I rarely use 3g on the phone as I have access to wifi most of the time, however I'd like to avoid bring along an extra Navigation device whilst travelling long distances( which again doesn't happen that often) which is the reason why I'am looking for an offline system. I don't care about live traffic alerts etc;

Yes I use Wi-Fi for my internet, not 3G and I am looking for any reliable way to use my SF as a SatNav even if I have to upload the data before I leave home. I stayed with Orange simply for one thing..Magic Numbers which really is a free service to a favourite number.
