Use without SIM card

Is the phone usable if it has no SIM card, or an expired/empty card? Obviously not for phone calls and 3g, but does Android function as normal otherwise or does it lock up/complain constantly? I'd be interested in using one just via wifi.

I've had mine for a week and still havnt put a sim in it yet! When it had the orange firmware in it, the email application wouldnt work without inserting a sim, but since I flashed itwith Pauls rom, everything works perfectly. even the GPS, which I use without Network positioning method get a lock pretty quickly.

ive only used it on wifi so far. Been using the stock rom too. and it works fine.
