Sleep end processes

When the phone goes to sleep, all the icons on the left of the notification bar disappear. I presume this means that their processes are being ended. I'm new to android but it seems like this shouldn't be the case. I'm having some of the issues with wifi described in another thread and I think that the various fixer applications can't work because of this. I'm using an R3 MCR from the kitchen. Can someone advice me as to what I should do?

EDIT: In case anyone turns this up on google after having the same problem, I had an option enabled in Super Manager that I didn't know about. It has an 'auto-cleanup' feature where it tries to save memory when you turn off the screen; I just unticked that.
