So it is necessary to sign the package afterwards or what? Been searching for an answer to this...

Unlikely, as I just made my own custom boot animation, and the SF didn't complain :)

Anyone care to give a guide? I am using windows and have winzip. Is it possible just to delete the 24 files or do they need to be substituted. Thanks in advance.

This is slightly off-topic but I'm just curious, has anyone tried changing the other boot screen - the one that is displayed instantly when the device is switched on.

The 'cat /proc/mtd' output shows a "splash" partition. So I'm just wondering if it can be changed via fastboot like the G1 could.

I actually like the lil green guy - he's what signifies Android! :)

JUST the green android guy? That's simple - just read the whole thread, and you'll see HOW simple. I don't get the rather redundant "lol" in your post... please tell me why everyone says "lol" all the time?... (yes, I know what it means!)

PS: Paul - you do realise that instead of having 24 identical PNGs, you should create symlinks (symbolic links) and call the symlinks OUK_480x800_<something>.PNG:

man ln

Spent hours last night trying this out with no joy. Have tried a number of different ways of doing this all with no success. Each time it gets stuck on the green man and end up having to put original rom back on. I am using ubuntu with archive manager(GUI), tried extracting the files before recompressing them, tried replacing the files within the archive without extracting them first. EAch method for me has resulted in fail.

When I extract the raw rom file there are 1028 files listed in properties, when i replace files within the archive then extract there are 1025 (yes i do ensure that all 24 are done) and if i extract all then recompress the file there are 700 or 800 files.

Help please.

I've uncompressed the mcri-system.tar.gz file & found the framework-res.apk file. How do I replace the PNGs in the framework-res.apk with the PNG's from the myanim.zip I downloaded? I'm on Windoze 7 but could boot into Ubuntu Live if pushed. Ta

EDIT - could the OP upload the modified framework-res.apk file with the Linux penguin and would this work if dumped in the uncompressed ROM folder prior to recompressing?

Yeah, could do, no big deal tho, not short of space on /system.

Read all this with interest. A tutorial with 'noobs' or 'nervous' peeps in mind would be nice.

Having said that though, I really like my MoDaCo guy! :) (Thanks P ;) )

Will.

I take it its a different method if you've gone down the clockworkmod route?

Is there a way of flashing the boot animation / logo without having to reflash the whole rom? (i dont want to lose all the apps i have installed, and widget placements) just the boot logo changed.

Thankyou

Yeah I get that, but it still seems *highly* inefficient (and possibly lazy?) to not fix something which is so very obviously using space, unnecessarily. VERY un-Linux like! This is the reason for symlinks :)

Here's something funny - today, I woke up @ 13:37. I just checked the post count on this thread... and it was 1337!

I think I am receiving a message here! :)

I've tried using Ubuntu 10.04 file roller application to modify the apk with my chosen png picture. I've had no success at all. If anyone could provide a step by step process with the applications they have used I'd be grateful.

The Ubuntu front end to tar/gz appears to be doing something quite strange as if I diff the modified rom.tgz I create with the modaco original there are multiple files missing. I haven't touched these -it is all a bit bewildering for something that should only take 10 minutes !
