Call Quality

I made the first phone call earlier on my San Francisco (on Asda mobile, my Orange sim isn't working yet) and the sound was pretty muffled, definitely worse than my old T630. Is there any way to play skype, music or some test sound through the ear speaker so I can rule out the network as the cause or the poor sound?
