Guest ScaredyCat Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 I wonder if they knew Gingerbread was due on the 11th November so were waiting for it... would be quite a coup to be the first Android tablet shipped with it. SC

At least it has 'Google MarketPlace approval' which I assume means Google Market. If the CPU was a bit beefier then it might be worth looking at. Edited November 8, 2010 by removed-14
Guest shawn0 Posted November 8, 2010 Report Posted November 8, 2010 Just been in PC World and the tosh/tablet had what looked like Opera Mini but when I looked up the IP address it gave a local one not Norway. So I should think that its uncompressed :-(

So I should think that its uncompressed :-( It's Opera Mobile. It probably wouldn't be quite as fast as mini, but it does also have some compression technology in the form of Opera Turbo which is a built-in functionality which compresses images (and prob other stuff) on Opera's servers. As someone else pointed out though, you may still be able to get Opera mini working on it though.

Guest margee Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 HI, i would be very glad to buy 10,1 inch could u let me know ??? [email protected]
Guest shutdown Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 kevrae....any chance of any news or info on this yet?
Guest swarrans Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I thought the folio was horrible for the price, felt ok in the hand but crap screen and unresponsive. The galaxy tab was ok but it just made me go meh! big phone, although I did say that first about iPad but i dont think i would buy a tablet under 9.7". If the vega is better than the folio, at £250 would be a steal really. Although I just hope they stick to their word and put Honeycomb on it. I went into PC World today and had a play with an iPad which was connected up to wifi and basically concluded that a tablet of this size would work well for me, but gulp £429..... I tried to use the Folio but it wasn't connected to wifi and so I couldn't do anything with it. Everything else seemed worse as expected - responsiveness, screen etc, but it is a lot cheaper than the iPad and it would work with iPlayer etc out of the box... I think I will buy the Vega by mail order when/if they become available and see if I can accept the inferior performance -- I am assuming here that the screen and software will make the Vega the same/identical to the Folio so I might as well pay £80 less? I have a nasty feeling I might end up returning it and getting an iPad though... Simon
Guest Carbonize Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I think I will buy the Vega by mail order when/if they become available and see if I can accept the inferior performance If that's your attitude then I can already tell you that it wouldn't matter what the specs were on the Vega you'd still consider it poor next to the iPad.

I don't understand that comment - I'm sure lots of people are in the same position as me - I want to like and keep the Vega when it comes out but the only way of knowing is to try it under home conditions. It will actually take quite a bit to make me return it and pay an additional £180 for an iPad... A rather strangely aggressive comment I'd say...
Guest Carbonize Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I can accept the inferior performance I think my post made perfect sense. You are already saying that, as far as you are concerned, the Vega will have inferior performance to the iPad and therefore you will never be happy with it.
Guest rferrett Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Been following this thread with interest for a number of weeks. And thought I would wade in with a comment. I have just celebrated a birthday and have close to 200 dabs worth of B-day money to spend so I am seriously considering getting a vega. What are the chances of it being rootable and getting Gingerbread when it comes out? Also is it right that Gingerbread aint going to have the support for large screens anymore and that will not happen until honeycomb? Great forum by the way folks!
Guest MarkoUK Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 (edited) I LOVE VEGA. Actually, I'm terrified that I'm going to be sitting at home over the Christmas holidays with feck all to play with because all the Android tablets that were released in the preceding months were rubbish. I'm wondering whether I should......ready for this?.........wait till CES in January and see what's round the corner  Sorry sorry sorry. I know we can't wait but maybe we should? Guest lekky Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 http://twitpic.com/34fkbw interesting!! Hah, I took that picture! It was in a big Currys in Manchester. The salesman said the system didn't tell when it would be in stock though.

Not sure what rumours you've heard but quite a lot of the big tech news outlets are saying that Gingerbread is 3.0 and has tablet support. The other thread is that Gingerbread is 3.0 but tablet support is coming with Honeycomb. Neither of these are true. Gingerbread is 2.3 which follows the mobile phone stream and thus does not have native tablet support. Honeycomb will be 3.0 and built for tablets. I'm sure the Vega will be rooted but the challenge of getting Gingerbread onto it anytime soon may be too much for the usual devs. Even then, building something that can make use of the larger screen space may not be feasible. I think the devs will run the show and I'm waiting to see what MoDaCo and Cyanogen etc do if and when they get hold of a Vega. I would hold on to your 200 till about Christmas time and see what transpires.
Guest Carbonize Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Yeah but then you get in to the never buying anything cycle because something newer and better is always announced. My better half has just paid £240 for an Archos 70 for me for Christmas and it isn't even in stock. Wish it had 3G and GPS but can tether through my phone for the internet. Only thing really putting me off is the shiny screen it seems to have in the videos. Both the Tab and iPad have done something about this but I'm hoping I can use a matt screen protector and not lose to much sensitivity.
Guest bewA Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 after playing with the galaxy tab and folio I'm pretty sure i won't be buying a tab this side of christmas. I'll have a play with the vega when its released but my concern is apps and games being upscaled which i suspect is part of the reason why most of these devices aren't coming with the android market. this is also part of the problem at the moment with android being open anyone can make a tab and have it installed which i think is hurting the platform. My view is if you want a tablet get an ipad as its a more polished OS, it doesn't have the horse power of the tegra systems but iOS unfortunately is more mature in terms of stability and consistency, this is why waiting for gingerbread or honeycomb is worth waiting for. imho
Guest Carbonize Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Tesco is currently doing a 2 for 1 on club card vouchers when used to buy a tablet which is why I was looking the other day as I have £100 in vouchers which would be £200 towards a tablet. Trouble is all they had was iPad, Tab and a new one that is out of stock anyway.

I'd prefer an android device (purely for proper flash support) but want a 10" screen. the tab is just too small. Can anyone confirm they def. sell it instore - it's not on their website.

I would say if you are a consumer and simply wish to consume purchased content, get an iPad. If you are a creator, don't.
