Remove Orange Apps on San Francisco, Simple Beginners Guide!

I tried z4root - it didn't work! It insists on rebooting after rooting and after rebooting it wasn't rooted. The phone never stays rooted with androot after a reboot either which makes a 1 click rooter that reboots not useful. As well as that, it installed a version of superuser that androot didn't like so I was struggling to get rooting to happen in either app at that point. In the end I had to uninstall z4root, download superuser from market, update superuser within itself and now androot works.

Hi. Im a total newbie to all this and had a few questions if anyone would be able to help.

-If I do this would it also unlock the mobile?

-If I do this would it invalidate the warranty and if anything went wrong would I simply put be able to go back to normal so Orange would not know I have messed about with it?

-Would this help with the wifo problems (it sometimes swithces off by itself)?

Thanks for any help ans sorry it these are stupid questions

1. No it doesn't unlock the phone.

2. It probably does void warranty, but others have taken the phone back de branded and got a replacement.

3. No it doesn't fix the Wifi issue.

Ive never connected mine to Wifi, but I *think* there's a topic on here about Wifi problems, so do a search or scroll down, as it may have come up with a fix! Unlocking the phone for another network costs around $5, there's another topic in here about unlocking the phone and its quite cheap.

This happened to me, exactly the same, every time I tried with Titanium. Just remove the battery and it should return to normal.

It's this reason that I used a different app removal program, I wrote the list and order of what I did to remove all the Orange stuff.. (see a couple pages back, post #114) Itg may be that you did not root the device (as it says it's rooted already, but in reality it's not )

Hope that helps.

I have plucked up the courage to do this and have fallen at the first hurdle. There are 3 versions of Universal Androot in the thread linked to on the XDA developers forum, the OP says he used the latest. Does he mean the latest or the latest non-beta version?

Thanks

The latest beta works fine. The latest non-beta didn't work for me but I might have done busybox wrong at the time.

Sorry for posting this in another place but I think its maybe beyond an absolute beginners area!

I have rooted and Rom'd my Orange SF to modaco 2.1 and some apps remained with the word orange in their name. I couldn't unistall using manage apps so I deleted the APK and their data using root explorer. However, they are still listed (with zero bytes) when I go to manage apps and cause an FC when I try to select them.

How can I edit the apps listed in manage apps. Is it possible to delete them from somewhere using root explorer or editing a file somewhere?

Thanks

R.

Thanks all, I used the beta of Androot and all worked fine. I followed the instructions last night, I only managed to save about 4MB of internal phone storage but at least I got rid of a few apps that may be taking CPU, I may remove a few more soon. I had a scary moment when I removed SIM Toolkit as doing that disconnected my phone signal, thankfully it popped up with a message after about 15 seconds asking me to select network (I use t-mobile), I would advise others not to bother removing SIM Toolkit. I used Titanium backup free and backed up everything before uninstalling but I have noticed that I don’t have a 'restore' option by any of the removed apps because according to the Titanium wiki you cannot restore system apps that are part of the ROM so god knows what is in the backup files I created!

Rheumatoid, if you read the thread it mentions changing packages.xml, I am tempted to also make the change but am unsure what to do.

When editing packages.xml I assume I just remove the chunks related to the old orange packages, such as this for the 'Your Orange' app:

<package name="com.your.orange" codePath="/system/app/YourOrange_Release_20100429_signed.apk" system="true" ts="1279980302000" version="1" userId="10038">

Thanks for the pointer. It does seems thats where the problem lies although some posts on the subject suggest it just recreates itself after editing and the data might be stored elsewhere. I will be interested to see what others say.

I have just bought a San Francisco on Orange, i have an orange SIM so dont want to unlock. However i do want to remove the orange apps. I have tried the advice in this thread but cant download the Universal Androot onto the phone, it wont let me. I have looked everywhere on the net for other ways, also i cant find a driver which works for the phone (i have windows XP) - basically I am stuck. i really like the actual phone but just don't seem to be able to do what others can. Any advice/help?

Be careful editing this file. I tried it (doing exactly as suggested in the previus post), rebooted and cleared davlik cache (just in case it kept a copy there) but my phone would not boot afterwards. I kept looping on the bootup screen. Had to reload my NANDROID backup to bring it back to life. Also simply copying a 'good' copy of packages.xml back to /data/system won't help you boot again. I strongly suggest not to touch this file until we get a reply from one of the devs on here, or someone who tried it and worked.

Hello,

Another newbie with a minor (?) problem. I have applied androot, titanium backup removed (most) orange stuff, etc, but now, ooops, when I press the "menu" button which brings the five options (all programs, add to homescreen, wallpaper, search and settings - when I press the "settings" (long press or short, doesn't matter) - nothing happens. Oops indeed. All other options work fine, likewise the four little icons at the bottom of the screen, which launch program list, mail, call and contacts.

Does anyone have a clue how to fix this? Ultimately I don't mind resetting the phone to factory settings, if it's still possible, lol.

p.s. I still have androot installed, I didn't see a reason to uninstall it, could it be the reason for this settings quirk? Or should I ask the question in another thread?

Regards,

n.

No idea why thats happening. Mine works fine. Have you tried taking battery out and turning it on then trying it??

But on a sidenote if this is your only problem and it doesnt come back then you can always go to settings and get the same from there.

sure, I removed the batttery (or should I surprise the phone by removing it while it's still on? Probably not a good idea...).

Anyway, didn't work. But then, your second comment is puzzling - you say you can "always go back to settings". I thought that THAT icon available via menu button - which won't take me to settings, is the ONLY way to get to the phone settings. How else can I access settings then?
