Can't get data over GSM - only WiFi

16GB Samsung Galaxy S ... vanilla Samsung FoYo build - Vodafone Uk contract.

Had to do a hard reset on phone.

I thought all was well .. reloaded apps, phone & apps working ....email coming & going.

It turns out the email was only working over home wifi connection ... away from home it’s failing to connect to servers. Browser is also failing.

As email on both accounts works fine at home ... all email config assume must be OK ..... it must be data config of phone (or SIM) for GSM use.

I was able to receive data OK until rest ... so SIM & Service assumed Ok

What may be key is that under : Settings / About phone / Status

It shows Mobile Network State as “disconnected” ..

Flight mode is not enabled

WiFi is off

Mobile AP is off

Under mobile networks ... packet data is On

Data Roaming is On

Network mode is set to AUTO

Network operator set to AUTO

General Sync settings ... ‘Background data is ON’

I can make & receive calls OK, and SMS

But email & browsing is now dead ... except when connecte3d to home WiFi

Power on/off screen shows ‘data mode activated’

Anybody got any hints what could be blocking this ?

Try looking in Settings-> Wireless and network->Mobile network->Access Point Names: should have a Vodafone Internet APN that is selected. If not, add it. Also Network mode should be GSM/WCDMA (auto mode).

Under APN ... there is only one entry

It is for Vodafone contract WAP ... but this is not selected .

I never set an APN before .. how do I do this, I never had to set one up when I first switched phone on ... just installed SIM and it worked.

I did look at 'New APN' but it asks for loads of stuff I would not know proxy, port, server, MMSC, etc. etc.

Assume this must have happened automatically initially when I put SIM in... phone was not a contract phone, but a blank unlocked version.

Do I need to get Vodafone network to send me a config file or similar ?

I have tried going off automatic network selection and manually selecting Vodafone ... no change.

It is set for GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)

OK ... fixed.

Turns out there was no APN defined for my network.

While there was one for Vodafone, my contract is with BT ... they just use Vodafone to provide.

I contacted BT, they sent me an OTA settings file and all working again.

My guess is when I did hard reset the phone while in US, as it was then on 'roaming' connection to Vodafone, it installed that as APN ... which would not work back in UK.

Hi all

OK ... fixed.

Turns out there was no APN defined for my network.....

Same issue here; no 3G/wifi only, which my tele-supporter solved by supplying new APN settings. Problably my issue started after FROYO upgrade through KIES!?

BUT now there is neither "home screens"(black screens),

post-783123-1292078488_thumb.jpg

nor "app's screens"(pending "wheel" on screen)!!!!!!!!

post-783123-1292078543_thumb.jpg

Please help, as restarting doesn't do any difference at all...

Could apps installed AFTER FROYO(=no 3G), but before applying new APN have anything to do with the total blackout(ex. "NoLED" app)?

HEEEELP :)
