HBOOT , S-OFF, flash - unsigned - some help needed

I'm new to Android and run into problems by following threads for Advanced over at XDA, as a result i have a red trackball that constantly lights up as soon the device booted up, therefore I need to get the basics and have a few questions:

I read about Retail, holiday and developer phones. Developers apparently seem to have more freedom in testing, in terms of being able to flash unsigned stuff.

This is why i followed a thread that explained how to downgrade to HBOOT 0.33, as a result I had to find out that SLCD devices are not compatible with version 0.33, a "workaround" with a Korean PASSIMG helped me to recover from black screen, but now I'm stucked with the red trackball drainer.

So my problem is that fastboot oem unlock doesn't set my device to S-OFF... Where to get started with that?
