Guest griff_dai Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Yes, should be. Also - see correction to Command Prompt entry for Windows 7: Type in: cd c:\extractedfiles then press ENTER (this gets you pointed to the correct folder) - Note there is a space between cd and c install-windows.bat then press ENTER Cheers, is this the same process for the official rom update?
Guest Clark80 Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Hi, I’m new to tall this. I am expecting my Vega to arrive next week (wishful thinking with this weather in London!) I will adding a subscription the same day and then will head over to the kitchen to cook up some goods. Can someone please sense check my approach for me? Going to un-tick/not select the following: Car home – will un-tick, don’t understand what it’s for and doesn’t sound like I will use it USB drivers for windows – will un-tick, I’m a Mac Custom ingredients - None Signing – Not required? How do I find this on my Mac - command prompt / terminal? Thanks for your assistance
Guest Toxophilite Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 (edited) Cheers, is this the same process for the official rom update? No I don't think so. Check out www.myadventvega.co.uk then Downloads then LITE Software Update Guide. I suspect that the official software update would knock out Paul's ROM mods. The new software version is 1.06.5 (without Flash at present ). I don't know if Paul's ROM is as yet applicable to this version. Correction - just noted that Paul's R5 ROM is applicable to v 1.06.5 Edited December 19, 2010 by Toxophilite

Guest arad85 Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Do Paul's USB drivers work with the official ROM? Yes, I believe so... as I think all my drivers are Pauls drivers and I can reflash with no problems.

Do Paul's USB drivers work with the official ROM? Or do I install the Advent Vega drivers from myadvent.co.uk then do Paul's after I have flashed the new official ROM I suspect that your last sentence is the right procedure. However I'm sorry can't give you definitive advice on that since I have only installed Paul's R4 ROM on my Vega, over the Version 1.04 Vega software. Maybe someone else can confirm the correct procedure? I need to know also if I decide to upgrade to 1.06.5.......
Guest trevor432990 Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Message to I106402 At a guess I'd say you need to have both the adb-mac and install-mac.sh files in the same directory before you execute the install program so you might like to check that.
Guest tech_fox Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Thank you Toxophilite for the information below. the following new items appeared in the Windows Device Manager: Under Disk Drives: NVIDIA Tegra2 USB Device Under Other Devices: NVIDIA Harmony Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers: USB Composite Device USB Composite Device USB Mass Storage Device For some unknown reason my Win7/Computer combination would only show with the Vega in Debug mode Under Disk Drives: NVIDIA Tegra2 USB Device Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers: USB Mass Storage Device USB Mass Storage Device I worked out that the first USB Mass Storage device was the Vega so after much retrying of installing/uninstalling drivers I am now in the following situation:- Under Disk Drives: NVIDIA Tegra2 USB Device Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers: USB Composite Device USB Mass Storage Device USB Mass Storage Device The second USB Mass controller is something else on my computer. Now the fun bit is at one point when I inserted the Vega USB connection the Device Manager did its refresh thing and for a second or less I saw Under Other Devices: NVIDIA Harmony but it vanished and I cannot repeat that experience. Looks like Win7 is a waste of time with the Vega at least for me. The good news however. I booted my computer (dual boot) into Vista and after a bit less hastle I have managed to get all the correct drivers installed. Now this may be coincidence but the success happened after I tried the Vega on an Old XP laptop (otherwise Vista was behaving as Win 7) which automatically installed all the appropriate drivers and left me with the Nvidia Harmony to sort out. It was almost as if something threw a switch in the Vega! Alas this has not solved the Win 7 issue. I find this annoying as I would like to resolve the issue and understand what is going on. I am now going to try to install the Modaco ROM using the Vista installation. Thank you.
Guest Toxophilite Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 (edited) To tech_fox Glad that you are getting there. Windows drivers can sometimes be difficult to sort out. I think that if the procedure doesn't work first time due to some problem, then the Windows devices and drivers can get screwed up, making subsequent installation more difficult. Good luck with Paul's ROM - it's very good. btw notice the correction given in Post #548 re the Command Prompt procedure (or see jasonic8's helpful Post #549) Edited December 19, 2010 by Toxophilite
Guest warriorscot Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 To be honest I think the easiest solution if you are having win 7 problems is just to get VMware Player and create a new virtual machine with Ubuntu or even really basic versions like puppy linux at 90mb would work. And just install it from the virtualised OS with the command "sh install-linux.sh" from the r5 directory. Only takes a few Gbs of space on a HDD I just used a storage drive and it runs a nice enclosed system which is also useful for testing things and running suspect files without risking your actual machine. You can even put an old copy of windows XP on it if you wanted. Neatly avoids the problem and adds a useful tool to your PC in one fell swoop for free.

Thanks for your assistance Car home not neccessary, it's a kind of function launcher with big buttons, useful when you use your phone mounted in the car... USB Drivers for Win : also not neccessary if you're on Mac, but you might need drivers for MAC, Im not sure Custom ingredients : not neccessary, I personally use it to customize and wrote my own little script to push some extra apk-s to the vega... Signing: depends how you want to flash. Clockwork might need it, if you unpack the downloaded zip, you loose the signature anyway... I'm not familiar with Mac, but I found this with google: go to /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
Guest mark astill Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Finally managed to get it working. wow what a difference & it was annoyingly easy, once I got windows to recognise the device as Nvidia Harmony and was then able to update to Paul's unzipped (*2) drivers. Just right clicked on windows bat install folder & ran as adminisator & it installed 1st time. Thanks to all (Paul & too many others to mention, as I read all 29 pages). Now need to load a few apps & start to enjoy the vega BTW if the thickest of all IT over 40s, can do this then ANYONE can. Dont give up & you will get an excellant upgrade. Happy xmas to all Cheers Mark

Guest castab Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) See the first post on this thread for instructions and downloads - everything is there. However, if you pay for the ad-free memdership of MoDaCo then you will be able to 'bake' yourself the full set of files and download them as one complete zip from the 2nd post of this thread. BTW the 'Bake' button on the 2nd post is invisible until you're a paid up member. Edited December 20, 2010 by castab

Guest gws999 Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 To all those people having problems especially with windows 7, I have windows 7 64 bit and tried to update my vega for 3 days and was finally about to give up and for some reason I download the driver for my HTC Desire phone to back it up and then gave it a go again, and my vega updated, do not know if it had anything to do with the HTC Desire phone program, might help.
Guest landofhopeandglory Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 Hi tech_fox I have installed the Modaco ROM on a Vista machine and also on a Windows 7 32 bit machine. First of all I performed the (double unzip) of the main zip file which I downloaded from Modaco. All the unzipped files were put into a folder (called 'extractedfiles') on my desktop. I then copied this folder into the root folder of the C: drive (for easy access from the Command Prompt - see later) The contents of this folder are shown below. I first set the VEGA to USB debugging mode. Then when the Vega USB connection was made to the PC, the following new items appeared in the Windows Device Manager: Under Disk Drives: NVIDIA Tegra2 USB Device Under Other Devices: NVIDIA Harmony Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers: USB Composite Device USB Composite Device USB Mass Storage Device The NVIDIA Harmony device was flagged with a ! showing that it did not have the right driver. Right-clicking on this device gave the option to update the driver. Then browse to the extractedfiles folder on the desktop, and the driver should be found. The 'Windows can't verify the publisher' screen can be ignored, and the driver installed anyway. After the driver is installed, the Device Manager screen can be refreshed if required. ( Done by right-clicking on the top level 'Computer' entry in Device Manager, then clicking 'Scan for hardware changes') The NVIDIA Harmony device should disappear, and 2 new entries should appear: Android Phone Android Composite ADB Interface Then in Windows 7 go into Accessories - Command Prompt. Type in: cd c:\extractedfiles then press ENTER (this gets you pointed to the correct folder) - Note there is a space between the cd and c install-windows.bat then press ENTER to copy all relevant Modaco ROM modifications to the Vega. Hopefully all will go well. BTW before doing all this, you perhaps should uninstall the 'Unknown Device' in Device Manager ( By right-clicking and selecting 'Uninstall') Hope this helps. Toxophilite, I could hug you. Nearly 3 weeks I have struggled until I saw you advice regarding the need to unzipping then unzipping again. I put this double unzipped driver file on the desktop. I unzipped all the files in Pauls bake and put that also on the desktop then deleted what you said to, checked for hardware changes and re-loaded with Pauls USB driver from my desktop file. Double clicked on windows-install.bat and VICTORY!!!! It has took me so long and so much time locked away with my 3 Vegas that my I had to slowly get my eyes used to daylight again My children have left home and gone to uni and my mrs says we have had a cold snap. Thanks to all of you for all your help and advice and of course your patience. Last but not least of course to Paul for improving a very sluggish very boring machine into a slick usable and flexible machine. Tony
