Hi tech_fox

I have installed the Modaco ROM on a Vista machine and also on a Windows 7 32 bit machine.

First of all I performed the (double unzip) of the main zip file which I downloaded from Modaco.

All the unzipped files were put into a folder (called 'extractedfiles') on my desktop.

I then copied this folder into the root folder of the C: drive (for easy access from the Command Prompt - see later)

The contents of this folder are shown below.

post-802797-1292708765_thumb.jpg

I first set the VEGA to USB debugging mode.

Then when the Vega USB connection was made to the PC, the following new items appeared in the Windows Device Manager:

Under Disk Drives:

NVIDIA Tegra2 USB Device

Under Other Devices:

NVIDIA Harmony

Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

USB Composite Device

USB Composite Device

USB Mass Storage Device

The NVIDIA Harmony device was flagged with a ! showing that it did not have the right driver.

Right-clicking on this device gave the option to update the driver.

Then browse to the extractedfiles folder on the desktop, and the driver should be found.

The 'Windows can't verify the publisher' screen can be ignored, and the driver installed anyway.

After the driver is installed, the Device Manager screen can be refreshed if required.

( Done by right-clicking on the top level 'Computer' entry in Device Manager, then clicking 'Scan for hardware changes')

The NVIDIA Harmony device should disappear, and 2 new entries should appear:

Android Phone

Android Composite ADB Interface

Then in Windows 7 go into Accessories - Command Prompt.

Type in:

cd c:\extractedfiles then press ENTER (this gets you pointed to the correct folder) - Note there is a space between the cd and c

install-windows.bat then press ENTER

to copy all relevant Modaco ROM modifications to the Vega.

Hopefully all will go well.

BTW before doing all this, you perhaps should uninstall the 'Unknown Device' in Device Manager ( By right-clicking and selecting 'Uninstall')

Hope this helps.

Great!

The figure is very helpful. I guess that one has to put all the drivers in the same directory. It took me 6 hours before following this figure to success. Thanks a lot.

Folks, I think that for most people, a complete rebuild makes sense for each of Pauls packs. Here's what you need to know.

1. Paul's stuff is NOT a ROM. It replaces files, changes settings or adds new files to the existing ROM.

2. The only ROMs are from Vega - currently 1.04 and 1.06_5.

3. 1.06_5 is a superset of 1.04. In other words, if you flash 1.06_5, you don't need 1.04.

4. To flash a ROM, you MUST be in the Vegas recovery mode (you know, back 2 secs, power+back 2 secs etc)

5. To apply Pauls' packs, you must be in USB debug mode (in Settings->Applications->Development)

6. Pauls' packs are supersets. You only need to apply the latest one.

7. The Vega app backup (Settings->Software Tool->Backup) plus Launcher Pros backup is everything you need to get back to where you were before a flash.

8. You do NOT need to restore after applying Paul's pack.

Given this, here's how I do my flashing:

1. Backup apps and Launcher Pro (haven't tried ADW but I expect it also has backup)

2. Flash 1.06_5.

3. Restore apps and Launcher Pro

4. Apply latest mcr pack. (do this after you restore as Pauls' fixes may overwrite something)

Job done!

(Experienced peeps on here - I know this is overkill and there are exceptions but for our newcomer friends, I think this is the route to upgrade with fewest tears)

Nice post - thanks for that!

I was assuming that all that was required was:-

1. Backup apps and Launcher Pro

2. Apply latest mcr pack - in my case r6 as I already have r5 installed

However, I guess your suggestion above is good practice as you are starting with a "clean" Vega ROM (1.06_5)

Cheers :(

Jellywobbles, you're right. In principle, you can just apply r6 but a lot of this stuff is best classed as experimental and from the huge number of issues I've seen less experienced folks are getting, I figure a clean start for the "bits under the bonnet" is the slickest way to go - and besides, Paul will move to a ROM one day soon so getting good backup and restore habits going will save tantrums.

Assuming that people can figure out the difference between ADB and recovery and how to check that the correct drivers are loaded, then this procedure should produce consistently good results.

When updating with r6 is the whole clockworkmod recovery installed or just the recovery app?

Thanks

updated today, having not updated since r3 or r4, all worked very smoothly. the browser feels even more responsive now, and the google maps app works really nicely now too. great work, thanks a lot!

Paul: apparently you missed my previous reply.

could you perhaps look into this issue? link

it's an issue that occurs in music applications using android's own media managing systems.

it is confirmed to occur on tablets with mcr installed, not yet certain if it also happens in stock vega firmware.

it looks like you're one of the few people here who might have the skills to figure out what might be wrong.

Clockworkmod is a separate install altogether. No connection with r6.

Wasn't sure if this is the right place. I have updated to the latest version but now whenever I try to flash anything flash related the browser just closes. I have un-installed flash and redownloaded it but it's still not working. Has anyone experienced this?

OK I just reapplied the mod and it seems to have corrected the issue.

I've had this too, on some Flash web pages but not all.

But it's not a Vega-specific problem. I've also had it on my Desire from time to time. (The Desire is running MCR r10--it's possible, I suppose, that something common to the Desire MCR r10 and the Vega MCR Add-on r6 is causing it.)

where did you get flash from?

advent vega requires a tegra2-optimized version of flash, any version of flash not coming from the advent vega forum here is likely to crash your browser as soon as it's loaded.

Clockworkmod is a separate install altogether. No connection with r6.

But on the first post one of the features included is Recovery reboot utility.

Is this just the apk from the market or is the whole clockworkmod recovery installed?

The clue is in the name :(

Sorry, feeling sarky today. It's just the recovery reboot utility. If you're not using cwm, just uninstall it.

I have the same issues with recovery. I just updated to r6 (which is great otherwise!) and hit the recovery app because i wanted to install the ad-hoc wifi update. I ended up with a black screen and nothing happened. I had to reflash the 1.06.5 ROM and add r6 and all my apps. Did i do something wrong? Should i install the whole clockworkmod? And is there another way to install update.zip files, for instance through adb?

Thanks!

You shouldn't have an "Nvidia android composite device". This should be "USB Composite Device". Try the following procedure to change the driver:-

In device manager right click "Nvidia android composite device" and select "Update Driver Software". Then select "Browse my Computer for driver software" then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" then select "USB Composite Device" (note DO NOT select "Nvidia Android Composite Device" AND do not select "Have disk") and then click "Next". At this point it should display a successful install of the "USB Composite Device". On closing this final window, with luck you should see two new entries under "Universal Serial Bus controller", namely "USB Composite Device" and "Andoid Debug Bridge Interface". If you get the latter use arad85's instructions in his topic "What to do when your USB drivers are wrong (win7/64)...., how to update to the correct drivers" . If you are really lucky you will see "Nvidia Harmony" under "Other Devices" If you see neither entry see my post number 580 on page 29 of the MODACO Custom ROM Addon pinned topic.

Let us know how you get on.

that worked a treat cheers everything appears to work now.....

Thanks

Alfie

Hi

I am new to the forum, ive tried my best to update my advent vega with this update but i cant get past the initial bit of installing the usb drivers, i have downloaded and extracted everything to my windows vista laptop and a windows XP laptop, i then plug in my vega with the usb and turn it on it boot mode, then in device manager it shows APX as a unconfigured device, i try to manually point it in the direction of the extracted usb drivers but it just wont except it, both vista and xp do the same. I have read through loads of walk through's but they all demonstrate problems that occur beyond this! (guessing its me!)

Did you try to update the drivers manually?

You need to find the button called "Have disk"...

Press it and point to the drivers...

Make sure they are unzipped first!

Are you trying to apply the official upgrade to v1.06.5,

or if you have done that, are you trying to install the r6 Custom ROM?

Check out: http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&amp...t&p=1526792

Note that all Zip files have to be unzipped preferably into the same folder. ( There is a further embedded Zip file after the main file is unzipped )

Looks like you are in recovery mode (back 2sec, power & back 2sec, back 2 sec).

To do this, you need the drivers from the Advent website. When you boot the system in this way, it is seen as a different type of device to the one you use to install Pauls ROM.

Personally, I'd do the following.

- Boot normally, turn on debugging and install Pauls drivers (you will need to extract both Pauls ROM AND the zip file in the USBDrivers directory).

- Once you have adb-windows working then

- Boot into recovery mode and install the drivers from the Advent site when prompted.

Hi Paul,

I've had my Vega now for 30 mins :-) I've updated it and now want all the rest of the goodies. As a previous Folio owner i can confirm this looks much better so far...

I've downloaded, unpacked and started to install....

I've got 2 process adb-windows.exe running and this in my command prompt:

* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *

* daemon started successfully *

I have a small beatle? symbol on my Vega but nothing else happens.... How long should i wait for the reboot?

I've tried to manually run "adb-windows.exe wait-for-device"

but this is just hanging so i'm guessing its a driver problem for adb-windows.exe. I dont see it in device manager listed under anything.

Any ideas where the device driver is added?

Thanks

Jason

I have the same problem. When I first connected my Vega, it automatically installed some connectivity software that allowed me to browse folders on the Vega from my windows 7 PC. I guess this has installed a usb driver that is not compatible with the ROM update. Any idea how I locate and update this usb driver, I cant seem to find it using device manager?

Just how good are all the ROMs? Still running 1.04 and the tablet is working fine with no flash issues. Was just going to leave it at that until the new update from Advent with flash supported. Am I missing something really essential by not updating the ROMs?!?

OK so r6 tom installed and all is fantastic, thanks as the vega is brilliant now, just one thing, the new usb host switch isn't working, it comes up saying that the vega will reboot but it just sits there and does nothing. I think I'm missing something? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks Paul this is the best.
