Guest HMZX Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 On that video you can see the backlight difference at least. And, yes, the pixels of an AMOLED screen are blurrier. But most people won't notice without a magnifying glass or looking really closely. so there is very little difference between amoled and lcd..?
Guest JCPren Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 (edited) so there is very little difference between amoled and lcd..? As I understand it, the backlight of the LCD screen lights up even those areas that are supposed to be black. If you ran an application like "Night Clock" which displays red figures against a black background, and kept it by your bedside at night, you would notice the whole of the rectangular LCD screen glowing in the darkness of the room, whereas with AMOLED you would only see the red figures. Yes, that's the biggest difference between the two. Others being AMOLED having better viewing angles and higher brightness while LCD usually has better/more natural colour reproduction. And, as mentioned, AMOLED's got blurrier pixels. Edited December 3, 2010 by Samehere
Guest joxby Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 They actually send you out a fully boxed version and the courier swaps em over on your doorstep. You keep mem cards and what not, you give em phone, backcover and charger, free 2gb SD card again! ;) Didn't happen like that for me last week, a courier delivered me a replacement SanFran in its own little box with no back, battery, cards, charger or anything.....so I dunno
Guest Nedjo Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 I have a replacement coming next week because of my current sanfran has really weak wifi reception. I dont want a TFT screen now that I have tasted OLED, maybe if I am lucky it will be OLED since they are only sending the handset out not the entire box, it doesnt even come with battery or backcover. what should I do am so puzzled now ;) if there's hardware glitch, they'll only change motherboard, not complete device, let alone screen! You'll get back your phone with different mainboard and that's it... if there's really WiFi glitch on hardware level...
Guest iserlohn Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) Got white SF yesterday. it's 512MB RAM, TFT screen. TBH, TFT isn't so bad. In fact TFT has more sub-pixels than AMOLED. My grey SF has the same type of AMOLED screen as my Nexus One, which mean that you only get 2 colours per pixel rather than 3. The easy way to identify AMOLED is to look at white text on black backgrounds. If you can see jagged anti-aliasing artifacts when the text edge is vertical, then it is AMOLED. This is due to the Pentile sub-pixel layout of the OLED screen. Edited December 4, 2010 by iserlohn
Guest xavia Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) I've just tried NoLED on my white one and it definitely glows, so I assume its TFT. However still looks very good and exceptionally crisp. Lovely screen :P I really hope that only applies to the white ones.. ;) Is there anyone that have purchased the grey SF this month and had already tried the NoLed on it? Guest Brianrh Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Is there any difference, does anyone know, in the current consumption between TFT and OLED displays? This could make a difference to how long a battery would last from when fully charge.
Guest Raspa Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 TFT has higher power requirements, due to the backlight.
Guest Picazsoo Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 TFT has higher power requirements, due to the backlight. I would like to see some battery life comparison test. Maybe someone got both OLED an TFT and can do that?
Guest Arr Too Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I would like to see some battery life comparison test. (Wonders if they've 'solved' this issue by using a 2000mAh battery instead... ;) )
Guest flyingscotno1 Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 Didn't HTC also stop the Original Desire after a short run and replace them with Super TFT too?
Guest Picazsoo Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 (Wonders if they've 'solved' this issue by using a 2000mAh battery instead... ;) ) I would just like to know how big of an issue it really is.
Guest Treacles Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I've seen comparisons on youtube of Amoled v TFT and the brightness of TFT is far outweighed by that of the AMOLED, as well as how clear the images show up
Guest Niks10 Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 (Wonders if they've 'solved' this issue by using a 2000mAh battery instead... ;) ) AFAIK, the net TFT model also ships with the same 1250mAh
Guest my-planet Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I just bought 1 white and 1 grey this morning. White one has TFT screen, black/grey one has LED screen. White one's forr the missus, so am in two minds about exchanging it for a grey one (she don't care, but I do).

Guest ScaredyCat Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 My grey arrived Friday. I wasn't sure how to tell until I booted my SF and G1 in a dark room. SF has jet black background while booting G1 entire background shines like a lighthouse. So I guess my SF has OLED SC
Guest AceOfSpades Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 This is a nightmare! I've been reading these forums getting excited about the blade but I wanted a white one, now I find out theres no more OLED!! I'm gonna try and get one in store hopefully they have old stock. If theres only LCD I'll consider not getting one, I tried android on 2 separate samsung galaxy tabs and it was slow and laggy, hopefully just badly configured but if thats how android runs on 1 Ghz I'm scared to think what its like on 600Mhz! Are there any tell tale signs of OLED on the san fran box, I don't think its possible to open it instore without buying

I was very surprised at how well the SF runs, especially with these use generated ROMs. Doesn't feel like 'just 600mhz' when in use. SC
Guest The Soup Thief Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 When I got mine and one for my sister in law (from different shops) a few weeks back they were quite happy for me to switch em on and play a while before buying And I agree, the processor's plenty quick enough for everything I've asked of it - having said that, I had a play with a Galaxy S the other day and was blown away by how fluid the animations were - could definitely tell the difference That slickness on the Galaxy S is probably worth an extra £50, flash and the better camera another fifty - not an extra £300 So all in, the Sanfran's a steal! (at least, with the OLED screen - can't speak for the TFT) Go buy one now!
Guest insurgente Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 balls ;).... pre pay wizard e-mailed me last week to say they expected new stock to have the OLED screen as they weren't aware of another version... I may go down to the orange shop to get one. they let me play with it last time...but how am i going to be able to tell? i'm assuming they wont let me install no LED on it

I suppose the quickest shopping-usable way is to look at the software version. My supposition being that if its OUK_P729BV1.0.0B05 it MUST be OLED (because that gives odd colours on LCD), whereas if its OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08 then its likely (or is it certain?) to be TFT LCD. Has anyone bought an OLED phone with the newer version software? Or does v8 mean the phone must be LCD? Edited December 4, 2010 by The Soup Thief
Guest abdidas Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I bought my sanfran directly from orange two and a half weeks ago and I just tested NoLED app and I get a little backlight compared to when I press the power button, is that normal for oled or do I have LCD screen. ???????!!!!
