Guest HMZX Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 I bought my sanfran directly from orange two and a half weeks ago and I just tested NoLED app and I get a little backlight compared to when I press the power button, is that normal for oled or do I have LCD screen. ???????!!!! if you have backlight when you test it in the dark, its lcd unlucky mate... ;)
Guest HMZX Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Didn't HTC also stop the Original Desire after a short run and replace them with Super TFT too? yeah supposedly they did stop amoled and sold lcds instead
Guest JamRad Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Orange are now pretending the SF was NEVER oled and was always TFT. Then again they are saying that unlocking the phone will mean the internet won't work and if you attempt to install a ROM on it the phone will surely brick D:
Guest MIKEYMC Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Be interesting to know what the chinese model features. Might be better off importing if it has led.
Guest Azurren Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 I just bought 1 white and 1 grey this morning. White one has TFT screen, black/grey one has LED screen. White one's for the missus, so am in two minds about exchanging it for a grey one (she don't care, but I do). She would probably hate you forever :P Most women care about looks not about value for money / performance ;) (And if she had her heart set on the white one..)
Guest HMZX Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 She would probably hate you forever :P Most women care about looks not about value for money / performance ;) (And if she had her heart set on the white one..) lol, its true
Guest Kthulhu Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 She would probably hate you forever :P Most women care about looks not about value for money / performance ;) (And if she had her heart set on the white one..) Agree...my wife prefers her TFT White over my OLED grey a hundred times...and do not talk her about Froyo and stuff, if with Eclair you can make a call, check your email and play angry birds: why bother she said! :P ;)
Guest Treacles Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 How long do you guys think they'l have stock with AMOLED screens? The soonest i can buy one is tomorro, if it dont snow -.-" And would i have to ask explicitly for it to be AMOLED or would they just get rid of the oldest stock first? Kinda glad that the white ones have started changing first rather than vica versa, as they are incredibly ugly
Guest userof2 Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 (edited) Uh oh, this is a worry. I just ordered a grey SF from the Carphone Warehouse on Friday. What are the chances of it being the TFT model? Gah, it's really annoying Orange had to do this, especially with no warning in the middle of the Christmas shopping season. Oh well, I'll guess I'll find out when it arrives ( ;) hopefully tomorrow). How will I be able to check? Is the difference really that obvious? Edited December 5, 2010 by userof2
Guest Treacles Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 How will I be able to check? Is the difference really that obvious? Turn the lights off when you first turn on the phone, if the darkest part of the bootscreen is as black as when its off, its AMOLED... But if the dark bits are grey and litten with a backlight, its TFT
Guest zurpher Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Got white SF yesterday. it's 512MB RAM, TFT screen. TBH, TFT isn't so bad. In fact TFT has more sub-pixels than AMOLED. My grey SF has the same type of AMOLED screen as my Nexus One, which mean that you only get 2 colours per pixel rather than 3. The easy way to identify AMOLED is to look at white text on black backgrounds. If you can see jagged anti-aliasing artifacts when the text edge is vertical, then it is AMOLED. This is due to the Pentile sub-pixel layout of the OLED screen. I have ordered a SF with AMOLED now but I've read that the quality as e-reader isn't up to scratch because of two sub-pixel issue. Is the text blurry with AMOLED? Would like to see a comparison (pics or video).
Guest Megagold5 Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 (edited) Just got mine yesterday after reading about this situation. Nobody in the Orange store had any idea about it. Bought it anyways and have been trying to figure out which it is since. When turning it on the black is just about as black as when off, but not quite....Maybe the glow from the Andoid/Orange logos? If it is TFT, its a bloody nice one, can see it clearly at any angle and video playback is astounding... Edited December 5, 2010 by Megagold5

Guest IPB_Refugee Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 According to the testers from connect.de, the TFT screen of BASE Lutea (the German ZTE Blade) is pretty good. Source: connect.de/testbericht/praxistest-base-lutea-1035365,6510.html So maybe we shouldn't be too disappointed that many of us will not get the OLED version of ZTE Blade.
Guest rxexdxbxaxnxd Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Check this out mate: And tell us what screen is yours :] I'm not convinced... does anybody have this test app used in the vid? I don't trust the noled software test... My device is about as old 2 weeks or so from Orange and there is light in the black areas with noled test, but it's nothing like lcd backlight, it's much fainter and everything else such as the pinky tint at lower brightness and the layout out the leds when magnified looks like amoled. I reckon, the faint glow is more likely the illumination of the glass from either the buttons or the actual lit pixels. Might be wrong, but is there not a way to tell from the linux drivers in use? /proc/kmsg says: <4>[12-05 20:30:05.286834] lcd module oled init finish phase1 <4>[12-05 20:30:05.286834] !lcd module oled init finish phase2 does that say anything?
Guest atillaahun Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Yes, that's the biggest difference between the two. Others being AMOLED having better viewing angles and higher brightness while LCD usually has better/more natural colour reproduction. And, as mentioned, AMOLED's got blurrier pixels. As I see both have pros and cons, so maybe the point would be the difference in the battery time. Any particular experience or idea about that? Because if OLED is only better with a couple hours in availability than I don't really care, but if it have at least a plus 12 hours (beside average use), than I would probably insist on OLED.
Guest ScaredyCat Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 I'm not convinced... does anybody have this test app used in the vid? I don't trust the noled software test... There is no test app in the video, it's a Nexus One boot animation. SC

Guest xavia Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Just read this on HUKD. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/orange-san...09#post10006142 Just to confirm I phoned myself and the guy told me it is TFT screen, all the AMOLED are gone. The new stock has TFT screen as opposed to AMOLED. Is there any data for that? I mean.. if i brought one SF grey today in an orange store i get the OLED or TFT screen?
Guest muluman Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 To all those people who have got a SF recently, did you get a white one or a grey one? Cos it seems like all the SF's with a TFT screen are white. Anyone got a grey san fran with a TFT screen? Thanks ;)
Guest Raspa Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 There are a couple of people on the forums who have bought a grey SF with TFT screen, sadly.
Guest rjm2k Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 I think TFT's are here to stay, seems to be a strategic shift at ZTE... "we have noticed that there are new versions of the Blade in the UK with a TFT screen instead of OLED, there also seems to be some new software to support it (OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08) which seems to work for both OLED and TFT models, can you confirm that it was designed for both? Is the move to TFT a permanent thing or just whilst there is an OLED shortage? " "The newest code we released had made a compatible between OLED and TFT. So the new software can support both OLED and TFT models blade. The issue that blade moving to TFT implicate the ZTE phone strategy matter, so please forgive me that i can not give you any informations. "
Guest oker Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 Can someone check if RAM is still the same amount on the TFT versions?
Guest Lollingsgrad Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 It'd also be good to know what the camera is. You know, what with the Japanese model being 5MP, TFT, 512MB.
Guest mjm1483 Posted December 6, 2010 Report Posted December 6, 2010 I just bought the TFT model yesterday - out of box says 161MB of free space. I'm assuming that in addition to the lesser screen they've skimped on the memory as well...
