rom OUK_P729BV1.0.0B05 should be Amoled

rom OUK_P729BV1.0.0B08 should be LCD

My ROM version is OUK_P729BV1.0.0B05, as mentioned the screen has a pinky tint when low brightness, all the clues point to amoled, but still.. when using noled, even with all of the dots set to black, the completly black screen is visible as a faintly backlit grey. I'm fairly sure it's amoled but the screen is excellent in either case. in daylight you can't tell the difference between black screen and off, but if as suggested in this thread you had only red text on a black background, in the dark you would see a grey rectangle with red text...

if the LCD's are anything like my 5 year old dell pda, then there is enough backlight even on a black screen to use it like a torch and light up the whole room.

I just bought the TFT model yesterday - out of box says 161MB of free space. I'm assuming that in addition to the lesser screen they've skimped on the memory as well...

Are you sure that's not the internal storage memory? Because that would be about right. Is this information what you got from Task Manager > Resource?

Hi I was just wondering, is it only the white SF's that are now being sold with LCD screens or are there LCD grey SF's too?

Thanks ;)

the older phones had about 161mb free, you need to go into the settings and you will be able to see how much total ram it has.

Just picked up a San Fran for my son. Checked in Store and the build is B05 - so its an OLE Screen.

There are still some of them out there.

Where did you get it? Local orange store?

Yes, that is the internal memory. I expected there to be more - I guess all of the orange bloatware takes up a lot of memory. I was planning to add a custom rom and get rid of it all but that seems pretty risky now with a TFT model. Is there any easy confirmed way to remove the orange apps on the TFT model?

With regard to the specs of the new model, another thread from Paul confirmed that the only difference is the screen.

Ah that sucks :P Im gonna check the build number on mine when i buy it, though to be honest I don't think an LCD screen would be that bad, apparently they are sharper than AMOLED. How does yours look?

My LCD build no ends in B08, the OLED one is B05. Main difference is that you can see the backlight behind the display so looks grey. The OLED looks classier because of the higher contrast, though the icons do look a fair bit sharper on the LCD one. On balance I prefer the OLED one I think, though though still great value for money. I'm now wondering which ROM is the best to use on the LCD to blow away the Orange crapware. The OED one is my wife's, wonder if would notice if I swapped them? ;)

This phone sounds so amazing, Can't wait to get it :P Yeah and the blacks are more vibrant I heard. The screen change means a change in rom too doesn't it ;) Ha go for it, she'll never know :P

sorry for the n00bish question but how does one check the build on a san francisco out of the box? i.e. without being rooted etc

My local orange shop apparently has 'loads' so i'm going to go down and try this NHS discount....they'll let me play with it but as I've never used one before I'm not sure how to check the build. Would anyone be willing to give a step by step/general account of how to check it? cheers ;)

Menu button>settings>About phone>Build Number/firmware version

You should be looking for number ending in B08 I'd guess for LCD..

or you could use noled and check this link:

if there is a backlight, then its lcd and if you cant see a backlight, its amoled

amoleds also seem to have a slight pinkish tint

Just checked my number, looks like its an OLED 05 model then. Guess I made a good call making a B-Line for the Orange store right away on saturday. That was in Norwich, incase anyone cares. ;)

Also, mine reckons it has 414.93MB total memory, approx 116 free atm.

There are a couple of people on the forums who have bought a grey SF with TFT screen, sadly.

They bought it from the internet (EDIT: Orange website) or from an Orange store?

I was looking at the kernel, it seems there are 3 types of screen support in it.

				case LCD_PANEL_TRULY_WVGA:
lcdc_truly_init();
break;
case LCD_PANEL_LEAD_WVGA:
lcdc_lead_init();
break;
case LCD_PANEL_OLED_WVGA:
lcdc_oled_init();
break;[/code]

Christ knows what else they are planning on putting in there.

If the phone develops a fault and needs to be replaced, would we have to accept a replacement with a TFT screen or can we ask for a refund?

Maybe theres an ips screen, my build number is B05 it looks like oled and has every characteristic of an oled but on a black screen it glows slightly in the dark when oled is supposed to be in complete darkness. Does anyone know of oled screens which do this? I bought it today from the store (monday)
