Battery life is terrible..

with mine being used as just a phone the battery lasts around 80 hours. Usage wise this is with just a few minutes of calls and about 300 texts. If i give angry birds etc. some hammer i can flatten in a few hours but this is only to be expected, i think the best way to look at the phone is as a laptop and not a phone. Turn a laptop on with the screen on a dim setting and it will last yonks, start to use it and its not long before the battery is flat.

I'm with the people who say this phone has good battery life. At first I thought it was awful, as I was using it all the time, full brightness, 3G, etc.

But really, turning the brightness down, turning off what you don't really need, and just using it as a phone, the thing will last for ages!

(protip: TURN DOWN THE BRIGHTNESS, the OLED is battery hungry :P)

I concurr with Rem1x, I get two days with wifi, data connection and sync always on, and brightness set to about 20%. Also I don't make much calls.

whats the point in having a vibrant OLED display only to have to turn it off to get a decent battery run out of it? doesnt that defeat the object of having a decent display to begin with>?

hey guys,

another noobie-question, as this is my first android-phone:

in "settings -> sync" there are two options to accept/disable...

what are these two 'headliners' all about & do they have to be activated the whole time?

Do they have to be enabled to get to the market? or for sync with an email (not gmail)?

Cause in general my apps (e.g. newsrob, K9, weather widget) are set to "manual sync" [no refresh-times of every 6 hours or sth.]

thx 4 help :P

the display is still vibrant and bright at 20% once you are used to it, I still have to check every so often that it's not got knocked back up to 100% somehow and it never has done.

Here ya go, what you reckon?

CPU Usage:

1) akmd2 (User: 1m 14s , System: 13m 17s)

2) Android System (User: 6m 2s, System: 3m 35s)

3) android.process.media (User: 3m 17s, System: 1m 54s)

Partial Wake Usage:

1) Dialer (Total: 12m 46s)

2) Android System (Total: 6m 36s)

3) Media (2m 42s)

Hmm that all seems normal although that could be stats since last unplugged? Try total in all time

Reading the calibration thread, I'm gonna give that a go later.

It may well be because I flashed the rom without having full battery or something like that.

Phones and OS's have moved on greatly over the last 5 years or so.

Battery technology seems like it has some catching up to do!

Been doing some testing with the battery over the last few days.

Fully Charged and left in sleep mode overnight for 8 hours used 8 percent. (92 percent on wake up). Wifi knocks off when the phone goes to sleep tho regardless of what you tell it to do so this is prob saving loads of battery.

Used the phone very heavily yesterday for testing wifi issues but no games were played.. also used the satnav with gps for an hour. After 10 hours battery was on 20 percent. Very good I thought.

I did use a method mentioned on another page a few days ago and this did seem to improve the battery life.. maybe it's worth a go.

Summary:

1.Connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green, indicating the device is fully charged.

2.Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off.

3.Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green.

4.Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on.

5.Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the notification LED is green.

6.Disconnect the phone, power it on in clockwork recovery, and wipe batt stats. You need to use this sequence only once.

Because we are using the Blade ignore the "green LED" because Blade goes green at 90%. Just charge it for a while, max it out each time.

Which ROM you are using?

Yeah, rebooting is heavy on the battery, but my previous, non-Android phone, did the same, or it'd lose even more.

About the battery, since I've started to it charge overnight instead of disconnecting from charger after "fully" charged, my battery run-time has improved.

i'm sorry if that sounds stupid but i always thought that you would decrease battery life by 'overcharging' any battery? I mean if it takes for e.g. 1-2hrs for full charge and you charge it for longer, doesnt that damage the battery?

they wont let you. FULL might actually mean 90% charge and it wont go much over that.

Its probably been said before but switching Wifi and 3G off saves on the battery quite a bit

Not stupid at all ... But with current batteries (Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Ion Polymer) it's almost impossible to 'overcharge' them. The charging mechanism in the phone will make it impossible to overcharge them. Overcharging them would not only damage them, but turn them into really dangerous thingies. So, the charging mechanism in the phone will make sure that this won't happen. Otherwise the battery could catch fire or explode.

Your fear to damage the batteries by charging them too much should be turned around. These batteries don't like to be discharged too much. Discharging them too much will hurt them severely. But your phone will also prevent that from happening. A 0% charge - reported by your phone - is typically the point under which the battery would be damaged too much.

Actually, these batteries like to be 'topped up' all the time. So, it really doesn't hurt to keep the phone on a charger all the time. (But please, don’t try to charge these batteries outside of the phone – without the proper charging mechanism in place - since it is very easy to let these batteries catch fire)

Based on my experiences with LiOn batteries on previous devices I'll just to add a little to the post above which I fully agree with.

For the first three cycles I fully charged the battery and allowed the phone to switch off when the battery became 'flat'. After that I found that the battery life was considerably greater than when brand new. Having done this bit of conditioning I am now quite happy to top up the battery as and when, such as before a journey.

I'm sure that those folk who got their SF's earlier last year are beginning to see some battery degradation now after many charges. I hope a reasonably priced source of new batteries becomes available soon.

Doc and wiffeltje : Thanks! I too did that full charge-flat btty cycle a couple of times but I couldn't notice a difference as I was using it differently than when I first got it.

So if I got it right, apart from the first cycles, you actually don't want ur btty to go flat and should try to keep it charged whenever you can? I have my USB cable with me so I don't mind plugging my phone now and again during the day...

Thanks for the info guys!

There is an enormous difference in battery life when you compare the stock 2.1 ROM with default settings to a 2.2 ROM like FLB or JJ with a widget (I use Widgetsoid) for turning things like Wifi/3G/GPS/Bluetooth/etc on and off on-demand. I went from 1,5 days of battery life to 3-4 days of battery life with the same usage pattern.

I'm having bad battery issues recently.

I've had my Blade since Christmas, and for most of that time I've had JJR6 installed. I was pretty happy with it. I use my phone in the mornings to listen to music on my way to work, a bit of wifi and texting and work, then music again walking home and before this week the battery would have been on about 80-70%. I'd use it in the evenings and it would get to about 60%(ish) so I'd charge overnight, just in case. I've been doing this since Xmas with no trouble at all, but then since last week I've noticed a considerable drop in the battery life. By the time I get home it'll be on 30%. I've not changed the way I use the phone (yes, I always turn the wifi off before putting the phone to sleep and I don't use 3g at all, yet), or installed any new apps really or anything.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I do intend to recalibrate the battery soon (I did it before installing JJ6) and maybe change the ROM to Fibblestan's, but I've not had time yet. Just kind of worried my constant daily charging has completely killed the battery :D

Just to add a little bit of extra info ...

LiOn batteries are not very sensitive to charging cycles. They mainly degrade with time, less with the number of cycles. Even if you would leave a LiOn battery on the shelve, it would be degraded after two years. So - whatever you do - it will show signs of degradation after about 2 years. (So, never buy a second hand LiOn battery and in a shop you should ask how long they where lying on the shelve)

Heat is the most noticable exception to this rule. LiOn batteries don't like heat. The degradation process will go faster if they reside in a hot environment.

Check Spare Parts (an app that is installed with most ROMs) to see if anything is keeping the phone out of sleep mode. You can also tell if the phone is not sleeping correctly if the front buttons switch the screen on -- only the top power button should switch the screen on. If there is a big difference in Spare Parts between "Time spent with the screen on" and "Time spent without sleeping", take a look at the "Partial wake usage" to see what process might be the culprit.

If this is the problem, try a different ROM. JJ has a known issue with processes keeping the phone out of sleep, and the ROM is not being developed any further. I have just moved to FLB and it sleeps perfectly.

If it's a physical problem with the battery, you could try the recalibration trick. Or maybe the battery is simply knackered.
