S-off your phone, use root explorer and delete it from the /system directory, then install from market ...easy as :)

I delete gmail.apk from system/app and from data/app but still not work.

Installation fails and gmail apk continue to work!

After I reboot the device and tha Gmail.apk appear again.

adb shell

mount -o remount,rw /system

cd /system/app

rm Gmail.apk

reboot

install Gmail.apk from the market

This sequence of commands helped me exactly. I had to S-OFF my Desire (something I had put off for long), but after S-OFF, I could easily remove both Gmail and VoiceSearch from /system/app. One reboot later, downloaded from the market, and now they are all up to date.

Note: It did not work for me before S-OFF.

S-Off? I'm guessing you mean Signature off or something like that?? Isn't that the default of the Modaco ROM?

I think I read that somewhere.. Root explorer is the app from Speed Software on Market?

Yeah, I know... Newbie but I have to ask to get the knowledge... :)

Newbie, goof, rookie or noob. That does not matter but, boy oh boy. Asking what S-Off means in this forum is like asking what french fries are at the McDonalds counter. Use Google before you start barfing all over this forum, please.

Sorry to be rude :)

Why not just explain it instead? :)

This worked for me... Noob and all.. :)

This is done by using a update script done by Teppic74 @ XDA...

No need for ADB and stuff.. I.e. for those of us that want it to be easy

to update this time.. I'm 100% sure that Paul, now that he knows that these apps

actaully get's an update every now and then, will implement in the R10 release..

*CAUTION*

This WILL erase Maps Brut if you chose that to be implemented into the ROM!!!

*CAUTION*

Got to

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997

At the bottom of the first post you'll find update_apps-17-signed.zip

Download to the SD card.

Start ROM manager and select Reboot into Recovery or however you want to enter Recovery mode.

Backup if you want... I did..

Choose Install zip from SD card

go to Chose zip from sdcard

find update_apps-17-signed.zip

choose Yes Install update_apps-17-signed.zip

Choose Reboot.

Done

I've tested and all apps works on my phone

but of course it goes without saying that I can't promise it'll work for all..

Hence the backup part.. :)

Look guys. The problem with the kitchen placing Gmail & Co. in system folder is easily fixed. Just cook your rom as you would do normally and then open the zip file and move the files you want from system/app to data/app. Problem fixed and you don't have to use adb.

Great.

Worked for me.

Thanks for the advice.
