I can see 3d-looking buildings but it's still tile-based as I can't rotate

Not all devices are deemed to have suitable multi-touch for rotation (cross-axis). My nexus one hasn't & I believe the fingerprint used on most cooked roms to ID the blade is based on it?

edit: compass mode is kinda nice though :)

Also I can get the 2 finger side view but can't get the 360 spin thing going if you watch the video above you'll see what I mean :)

Yep,...using Pauls Froyo alpha4 WIP; un-installed YouTube.apk from /system, then reinstalled it from Market (it wasn't previously showing as an update to be actioned). Strange, but working well now.

can u post the youtube apk u using for me plz

...sorry fella, see above.

For info, I just tried to get the 2-finger map rotation working by applying the fix described in the Vega forum here: http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-v...s-5-0-rotation/

It didn't really work. The map does rotate, but it's not really usable. Sometimes it rotates in the opposite direction to the direction that you rotate your fingers. Sometimes it just doesn't really move at all. I guess this is a symptom of the touch screen DualTouch Vs MultiTouch axis flipping issue that several phones suffer from.

Think I'll roll back the change and live without the rotation...

I also tried and found it quite usable, especially in 3d mode. For me it's better than no rotation at all.

Did you guys just add the new file or replace the old one? I just added it, but it doesn't seem to change anything on mine.

Just add "<feature name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct" />" to android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.xml

I added it alongside the existing one as the filenames are different - and that's what worked on my Vega - then did an 'adb reboot'

Compass mode working fine for me.

Sorry, but I'm too stupid to start compass mode. Is there any trick?

Thanks!

3D buildings isnt working for me for some reason on pauls 2.2 alpha3.

EDIT: nevermind it has decided to start working now.

I notice there's a lot of people complaining they don't have vector maps because they can't rotate with their fingers.

This is not what vector maps are. The vector maps applies across the board, and isn't just related to the 3D buildings, the whole way the maps are drawn has been changed. Zoom in on any city one step at a time, and marvel at how each time you zoom, the map is no longer re-drawn for the new level. That's what the vector maps is really all about.

Are you running pauls 2.2 alpha3?

For compas to work it needs your current location, and as the coarse location isnt working on on alpha 3 you need to enable the GPS, then hit the compass button top right.

If you want to fix the coarse location on alpha3, install one of the gingerbread themes - the problem is in the framework and is fixed in the themes.

I'm on Modaco 2.1, but don't seem to have a compass with google maps. There is a compass mode in street view and that works fine.

I noticed when I installed Maps 5.0, it only shows 2 New Features, Offline Nav rerouting and Updated Driving and pub transport directions

Is i something to do with the google maps version built in to the R4 rom? The download is just over 5Mb but under Applications it shows as over 9Mb.

As for the android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.xml, I added the .distinct, but also added another file android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct.xml but none of this made any difference to Google Maps...

Which Roms are working with GoogleMaps5 new features on the SF?

Do you guys have the google navigation working? I can't start it. It loops a message "Checking navigation availability". I don't know if it is connected with google maps 5 because i haven't used it before.

Looks like the the san fran has the same screen issues as the the Desire (which I have). You can perform the hack above and it does enable it, however you will quickly encounter the problems with the Multi-touch screen.

That said, I've a technique which actually works ok for rotation (I actually read this somewhere else and then stuck my own bit on at the end).

For rotation:

-hold your thumb down on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (your thumb must stay in this position the whole time).

-using the index finger of your other hand, swipe left or right in an arc motion (say from about 1 o'clock to about 5 o'clock) or vice versa. The map will rotate. Both the thumb and the finger should still be on the screen.

- (Now this is the crucial step and if you don't do this, the map will go mental.) In a fairly quick motion lift your thumb FIRST, immediately followed by your finger. The map should stay in the place you rotated to.

Repeat until dizzy!

Very helpful. Thanks for posting. Hopefully someone will one day find a way of tweaking the code of the DualTouch to work better.

There's not really anything that can be done, it's just a crap digitizer.

Cheers... mine doesn't go mental if I don't lift fingers in any particular order, seems to behave itself. A quick mess with it and I find that placing a finger on the centre of the screen and moving another up or down the side rotates better, as the centre of the screen stays fairly static (dependent on accuracy of stumpy fingers). Of course your hand gets in the way a lot more.

There must be a bigger difference in the multi-touch between the desire and the san fran than I thought. The action you describe doesn't work at all on the Desire.
