Google Maps 5.0

OK, so thanks to this thread I've got the spin and two-finger slide working how they should (under 2.2), but is somebody at Google having a laugh with tourists? Why have they got Buckingham Palace swapped with House of Commons? :) ;)

Posted (edited)

I noticed google maps 5.0 on the market, and thought I'd give it a try; de-installed the maps I had (brut 4.6 iirc) but have no success installing 5.0.

When I try to install I get "Incompatible update".

Did anyone have more success (and what did you do)?

Thanks, Frans

Hm. I'm using French Fries R5, this has 4.7

I already reflashed, but that did not help, removing the maps from the .zip file (in system/app if I recall correctly) gives me an mapless SF, but still it says "invalid update". The same happens if I try to upgrade from the apk instead of the market.

I'm open to other hints, I feel I tried whathever I could think of.

On Pauls 2.2 alpha3 it automatically updated, no probs...

Might be a bit extreme, but change ROM? I've never heard of french fries R5, but if its 2.1, moving to 2.2 makes the phone much more responsive too.

French fries is listed here, it is based upon the french rom. I also tried hungarian hedgehog (that did not allow me to read my contact from sim) and froyo 2.2. (r3/4)

Froyo did not display the operator name on the home screen (I'm not in the UK) and seemed to be less reliable wrt wifi; it also seemed that the signal strength with the gsm was a little bit less (but maybe that is just a matter of perception).

Also I seem to get more failing apps.

edit: I never had upgrade issues with other apps

(and if anyone has success upgrading with french fries, please let me know).

Make sure that Street view and Latitude is also gone. If not uninstall them and try again.

I also had a problem that seem to be because I had Brut installed on system. To solve this I first uninstalled brut from system and reinstalled it on data. Then I uninstalled it again using the uninstall function in LauncherPro. After this I had no problem installing 5.0 from Market

i have maps 5.0 installed but never get vector maps, still image maps showing up

maybe google is not happy with some phones / roms that they don't recognise?

I managed to install it by removing both maps and streetview (this also removed latitude) from the rom zip file, then reflashed, factory reset, cleaned all caches, after that I could install from the market.

Perhaps an uninstall and a reset/cache clean would have sufficed.

If the cache is not cleaned and factory reset is not done, I could not re-install maps, still got the same error. (technically probably a reset and cache clean is not needed as I am reflashing with the same roms).

Haven't seen the vector maps either. Maybe they are on the layer my maps ? Didn't play with that yet.

Shouldn't need to change the layers to get vector maps. I get vector maps from the off in Froyo, maybe it's different in Eclair as I don't recall getting them working on any Eclair rom.

What Froyo rom are you using?

Apparently some people got it working on other phones with 2.1 (see e.g. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Goog...e853&hl=en)

(and actually it is not really the vector maps I'm interested in, I'm mostly interested in the off-line cache, ideally I would like to pre-cache an area (e.g. when traveling abroad))

edit: my version info reads:

5.0.0 (#5014) gmm-android-zte

platform: android:ZTEP729C-ZTE-BLADE

dpi 240

Could this be location specific? (I am in .nl)

You already got it. It is in etc/permissions/android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.xml

there you need to have a line inside <permissions>...</permissions> tag

<feature name="android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct" />

I can tilt the map using two fingers but it doesnt go all 3D or anything like in the promo video

Have you tried search?

it's obvious he HAS used the search to find this thread

If you want to help simply give people a link to the another thread if you know of a more relevant one instead of being blunt bordering on rude.

Edit: I merged both threads together.

For a moderator that's a poor post. It's obvious that someone else merged the threads with my post too. My post was related to another thread in which there were questions on google maps 5 which are answered here. Because the threads are now merged, my post looks strange.

www.androlib.com

but you need a code-bar reader (mobiletag or barreader)
