Step by step guide to USB Host

I am still happy on 1.04 and r4 and as much has I would like USB host and the new maps I think I am going to wait for an updated rom. That is unless the temptation gets to great which it probably will now.

I was in the same boat as you but I must be much more impatient lol

I was in the right frame of mind and challenged myself. Still not 100% sure how I did it but the kind comunity here held my hand and walked me through it. I'm more confident now and will probably try other things too. Looking back it isn't really as difficult as it seems (easy for me to say now I have USB host) lol

I think the more things we try the more educated we become about our devices.

My Laptop is now packed away and I'm happily typing away on a wireless KB - mouse and Memory sick attached to USB hub ....... I may not need the Dock I was holding out for now :)

Also, was wondering if there is any way I can stop the onboard KB popping up whilst usb KB is connected ?

Once again, thanks very much to all who helped me and continue to hellp ;)

Bazzlad the rapidshare.com website where the zip file is held has been given a RED flag from my McAfee SiteAdvisor saying it could have adware/spyware being sent from it. Can you verify this yourself and advise us if there any issues with this site as far as you are aware please?

Rapidshare is one of the oldest filesharing sites and has millions of users I'm pretty sure your site adviser is wrong. The content on the sites itself is all uploaded by users so it will have lots of nasty stuff on there but you choose what you download like everywhere else.

On a side note mediafire is a much better sharing sites as it doesn't have any limits for free users like rapidshare and other sites do.

Works fine with any version of Paul's MCR addon, you only need MCR for root access.

OK bit the bullet and downloaded the zip file in Step 3) now trying to understand what "place them on the ROOT of your SD Card." means in terms of a directory name i.e. is it / or /root or /sdcard or another ?? I'm still getting used to the file structure here folks so bear with me please :)

FYI for those not in the know GScript can make a short-cut for any home screen, I customised mine with icons I found online.

ROOT is the main body of the SD card.

so this means it goes straight on the card and will not be inside any folders.

e.g

c:/SDCARD - < this will be root

as you see no folders are involved.

Thanks r8zer but does the c: part of the pathname come into it if I'm looking within the Vega itself. In other words within Filemanager it would just be /sdcard right?

That's it now I am going to have to give up!!!!!!!!

I just can't get this to work...............

This morning I started again and reflashed the vega latest firmware then put Pauls latest Rom on with no problems what so ever.

But I just can't get this to work.

I am getting to the command prompt and typing in > adb push flash_image /data/local/ into the command screen i get this

1200 KB/s (0 bytes in 787448.000s) appearing on the next line after a few seconds.

I am guessing that it shouldn't say 0 bytes but should be copying something over???

This is where i get stuck.

I have followed the adb guide and if i type in adb devices i get a list of devices found 1714117*********

So the vega is connected.

Help please or should I wait for Paul to include it in the next ROM update????

I know exactly how you feel, however . . . . . . I got the same "0 bytes in 787448.000s", but then carried on with the second command line and it's all working. All steps after worked like a dream.

Don't give up, I persevered and the people here do help.

So I got USB host to work with my keyboard and mouse, but I'm struggling with external storage. I've tried two disks, one of which is a Kingston, and a Toshia 250G drive, but can't seem to get to the content. I've looked in the various /mnt sub directories, including /mnt/usb/sytem_usb, but they're all empty. I find it strange that none of these devices would work, so I guess I'm not looking in the right place or doing something wrong. Any suggestions? Do I not need to mount these devices, like in linux?

Maybe try a memory stick as it needs less power. Assuming the hdd doesnt have its own psu?

Thanks everyone for your help and as a result I managed to apply this useful mod addition. There are a few areas where I stumbled which I shall recall for others who might try this install and similarly get tripped up:-

I missed out steps 1 & 2 as I was already at the correct mod/release level

Step 3) I downloaded the zip file from my PC and extracted then moved the files to the Vega using Astro Filemanager with SMB Module (which enables you to do file transfers wirelessly over your wi-fi network). I suspect that I could have done this straight from the Vega instead ? If this is the case can people who are writing these instructions remember to clearly state for each step whether they should be done on the PC or Vega please.

Step 4) In the note about setting up an ADB by moving Paul's original adb-windows program it should also mention that the .dll libraries need to be moved as well as the cmd will not run unless they are.

Now busy testing devices ..... so kudos to Bazzlad and everyone for pulling off another terrific enhancement to the way my Vega works and keep them coming :)

P.S. Should have asked is there an Android equivalent of the 'Safely Remove Hardware/Eject' system used in Windows XP so I don't wreck any USB devices ??

OK thanks R8zer

In that case, if you know linux, you can install the connectbot application which provides an ssh client and a local terminal

You can enter

su

On the terminal to get root. Then

df

To see what mount point your usb device is on. Then

umount (path to usb)

To safely unmount the device

would you not be able to run those commands in terminal emulator on the vega.

thats free from the market.

and also what about making a script for gscript with those commands to stop the device, before removal.
