What to do when your USB drivers are wrong (win7/64)....

Sounds like you haven't gone through the "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" (this will result in you pressing the "Have Disk..." button). This option overrides Windows in its entirety and installs the drivers YOU want to install, not Windows. That's the important bit of this walk-through - we are installing the drivers Paul has supplied and bypassing Windows decision making process completely.

I tried that as well and selected the android_winusb.inf file for install. I got the message that "The folder you have specified does not contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems"

Are you sure you have debugging turned on (on the Vega go into Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging ticked). If debugging isn't turned on, I don't think you will be able to install the correct drivers.

I had the same problem (Windows 7 64bit)...I could not see that driver. Tried it on a WinXP machine and worked first time.

"BEGINNING OF YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS IF YOU CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHICH DEVICE TO UPDATE SECTION

Some people don't see this device and can't find which device they need to update. There is a way to figure out which device needs updating (or at l;east this should work). Firstly, you will need a free tool USBDeview available from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html. It is free and is a standalone program"

I have the situation described above whilst running Win 7 64bit

I upgraded to the latest Advent firmware following exactly the "step-by-step-update-guide", I have downloaded USBdeview and run it, but only see 2 Nvidia vendor specific devices - the Tegra 2 USB and Nvidia USB Boot-recovery driver

I do not see anything pertaining to Harmony etc anywhere in Device Manager whether the device is connected or not. All I see when connected in USB debugging mode is a Nvidia Tegra 2 USB drive entry under disk drives!

If I connect without USB debugging enabled I get prompted to mount the drive for storage and can see the SD card OK

What do you suggest?

In the Device Manager, I suspect you have a new entry under "Universal Serial Bus controller" called "USB Mass Storage device". You can identify it by opening its properties, selecting details Tab and then selecting Hardware IDs in the Property drop down box. The Vega entry will have two lines that read:-

"USB\VID_0955&PID_7100REV_9999&MI_00"

"USB\VID_0955&PID_7100&MI_00"

Once you have identified the correct "USB Mass Stoarge device" select "update driver" then "Browse my Computer for driver software" then "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" then select "USB Composite Device" (note DO NOT select "Nvidia Android Composite Device" AND do not select "Have disk") and then click "Next". At this point it should display a successful install of the "USB Composite Device". On closing this final window, with luck you should see two new entries under "Universal Serial Bus controller", namely "USB Composite Device" and "Andoid Debug Bridge Interface". If you get the latter revert to arad85's first message to continue with the driver installation. If you don't get the "Andoid Debug Bridge Interface" entry see my post number 580 on page 29 of the MODACO Custom ROM Addon topic.

Good luck

I can't tell from you Device Manager screenshot.

With your Vega plugged in, turned on and in USB debug mode, do you have an entry under"Universal Serial Bus controller" called ""USB Composite Device" associated with the Vega? I think this is also necessary for the debug mode to work. My post number 29 a few entries up will give you a clue as to what to do if it is missing.

Funnily enough I just had the same issue after seeing your post.

I think the connection must go to sleep after a while even though the Vega is turned on. Try unplugging the Vega, wait a few seconds then plug it back in (turned on in USB debug mode of course). Then try your adb device connection.

See the post above yours. Please post a USBDeview screenshot. USBDeview available here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html.

EDIT: two would be more helpful. One with the Vega in debug mode connected, the other with the Vega not connected.

Hmmmm. I don't think you should be using "NVIDIA android composite device". When the option comes up select "USB Composite Device". I have just checked my Device Manager and USBDeview and no where do I see "NVIDIA android composite device".

I would insert an image but it appears it needs hosting somewhere.

It's not the "USB composite device" you should be updating.

OK just to be clear.

With the Vega connected, turned on and in debug mode, in Devices manager you should see the following entries associated with the Vega:-

Android Phone

--Android Composite ADB Interface

Disk Drives

--NVIDIA Tegra 2 USB Device

Universla Serial Bus controllers

--USB Composite device

--USB Mass Storage device

quick question, I have unzipped all the files (Paul's ROM and his USB drivers) I have put all these in a file on the desktop 'MODACO Unzipped ROM'..... However should I have put the Drivers in a different folder as I have to perform the official rom update first (but using Pauls USB)....

This is all prep for the morning :(

Many thanks for your assistance, I can now see the Android phone device in Device Manager ;)

Cheers

OK.

Firstly USBDeview can see all drivers that have been installed even if they are not currently active, so no suprise the two are the same.

Now you have 5 drivers which is very odd but perhaps more significantly as eluded to in my earlier post you have an entry called "NVIDIA android composite device". This should be "USB Composite Device".

You could try just reinstalling "USB Composite Device" in place of "NVIDIA android composite device" and see if that works but I would be more inclined to use USBDeview (run in administrator mode) to uninstall all the drivers associated with the Vega (Vendor ID ID0955, Product ID 7100) and reinstalling from scratch. You appear to be very close so this should work.

Yes, USB mode with without debug will be the same.

Have you tried a PC reboot? If not, try that first. Ith that doesn't succeed, try this:

  • Disconnect vega from PC completely
  • With those 5 drivers selected in USBDeview, right click and select "Uninstall Selected Devices"
  • Connect Vega back to the PC
  • Have a look what USBDeview shows now

If I understand your question correctly you intend to update your Vega using the ROM image from the "myadventvega" site. If this is the case you must use the USB driver from that site first to enable that update. I would keep these files in a separate folder from the MODACO files to avoid confusion.

Having done the official ROM update then follow Pauls instructions and use his USB drivers for his update. Note to reach his driver you will have to do two extraction processes as his drivers are a zipped file inside a zipped file!

If you have a normal installation you will be using Pauls drivers to update the "NVIDIA Harmony" entry. If it is slightly abnormal follow arad85's guide in this forum to update "Android Debug Bridge Interface" entry. If you are really unfortunate to have neither entry then see some of my earlier posts in this forum. Also post 580 on page 29 of the MODACO Add on ROM forum might be helpful.

I keep intending to write a comprhensive guide to all these USB and installtion problems but others like arad85 have already started so it would be a duplicated effort.

update composite usb driver to nivida android composite usb

Try again, but don't do this. You need Composite USB Driver (have a look at my USBDeview below)
