Guest Iggy82 Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I changed from Tesco Mobile ROM to the Baltic 2.1 ROM in order to debrand. I requested an unlock code from a company and supplied my network operator as Tesco. However, the unlock codes supplied do not work. Could this be because I changed to the Baltic ROM? Do you think it's worth trying going back to the Tesco ROM and trying the unlock codes?

I haven't tried unlocking my GT540 but did unlock my previous phone, a HTC S620, and as I understand it you should be fine if you flash the tesco rom and use the unlock code then later can flash any rom to replace it. I think you have to have the providers rom to use the unlock code but that after it is unlocked can use any rom. With my htc I did this and after unlocking had quite a few different roms with no problems. Dave
Guest Corrupt Systems Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Surely if you install a complete new ROM you wouldn't need to unlock the phone? I could be wrong though.

Actually the ROM does not store the unlocked status, its elsewhere in the phone's memory. Therefore, by changing ROM, you will not unlock and locked phone. Let me make it clear we are talking about network lock, not SIM card lock PIN or phone lock PIN/pattern. I've been given more codes by a different supplier, going to try those when I get home. If they still don't work, I'll revert to the original Tesco ROM and try again. I'll let you know progress (if any!)

Yes that is correct but the reason you had to specify your provider is because the code is linked to your current provider, the network lock is what some people also refer to as a sim lock in that in allows use of alternative networks sim cards hence why you will likely need your specified providers rom installed when entering the unlock code and sounds like it could be why your unlock hasn't worked yet. Once unlocked it will not re lock if you use a different rom. Dave

Well that may be true in some cases but I just received a new code from eBay member 'e-unlocks' and it worked without having to revert to the Tesco ROM. In fact, they never asked me which network provider I was using.

Glad it works, unfortunately whenever they ask for your provider it usually means they need it as at least with the phones I have unlocked a Tesco unlock code will not unlock the same phone if it were say O2. Some places can provide what seems to be generic or universal codes though. Either way glad you have yours sorted :D Dave
