Guest synet Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 I use this car charger from Maplins - http://www.maplin.co.uk/micro-dc-to-usb-adaptor-274029 - and this one from Expansys at home - http://www.expansys.com/expansys-dual-usb-...s-plugs-193313/ I had to try a few different cables to get the SF to accept that it is charging from AC. I use this cable from Lindy - http://www.lindy.co.uk/retractable-usb-2-c...80cm/31619.html I've just received a couple of the belkin car chargers, but have not got a spare usb cable yet. Are you saying if I get your cable, it will come up as charging AC without any hacking?
Guest Lee Black Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 My Car has a USB, that i plugin to use iPod, the songs are displayed as playlists on Radio display I plugged in my San Fran and Hey! it worked, folders appear and quick navigation to music folder, hey presto! ;) Also streams from Dropbox too AND charges at same time :):D
Guest pjoates Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Mine was the same and I couldn't find anywhere where it says USB or AC charging. However, I have downloaded "Spare Parts" from the Android marketplace (free) and that does tell you in the "Battery Information" screen. It actually says "Battery Status: Charging (USB) Many thanks for your reply. I have downloaded Spare parts and it works a treat. Thanks Paul Oates

Using the cable and Maplins car charger with no modifications, the SF says 'charging (AC)' I had already attacked and modified my Expansys charger (not recommended as it's not easy) before I tried that cable. Some cables (from Lindy) I tried would still only give out USB charging even after I modified my Expansys charger.
Guest ZTE Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 My SF just temporaily shows "Charging (xx%)" when screen turned back on. Where does it show USB or AC charging please? No doubt simple but I can't find it. Paul Oates Have a look in settings/about phone/status. Should be in there under 'Battery Status'. Is that what you mean? Hope that helps. ;)
Guest Magatame Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 This topic was a great help, I now know what cable and charger to get  Thanks! Was just curious how you guys mount your San Fran in your cars? Is there some kind of accessory I can get? (offtopic - I'm also looking for a bluetooth headset for my car, anyone recommend a good and cheap one? (never bought a bluetooth headset so wasn't sure on compatability so thought I would ask while were on the topic of car stuff lol)) Thanks :)
Guest tdodd Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Was just curious how you guys mount your San Fran in your cars? Is there some kind of accessory I can get? I use a generic adjustable holder that cost me a fiver from the Vodafone Shop around six years ago and used to hold my MDA Vario before switching to the San Fran. It is small and black and sticks discretely to the dash rather than having a suction cup and arm so it can remain in place without drawing attention to itself and inviting the unwelcome attention of the curious.
Guest ZTE Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Was just curious how you guys mount your San Fran in your cars? Is there some kind of accessory I can get? Take a look at this thread: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...n-mount-for-sf/ I use the Nokia CR-115, which I can highly recommend.
Guest Komatoes Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 If it helps anyone my Sony Ericsson AN300 micro USB car charger shows as charging "AC"
Guest TheDOC1 Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 I'm using a small mini USB to micro USB cable in my car and I've modded it: Diassembled the plug on the mini USB side, cut D+ and D- cables from the plug and soldered the cables together (so that just the D+ and D- pins on the micro USB side are connected). Works very well.
Guest stanno Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) I'm using a cheap car charger (£3) from ADVERTISING SPAM. Charges as AC. LINK May be a problem for GPS units in bigger cars with swept windscreens and if your cigarette lighter is down by the handbrake because it's not that long. Edited January 22, 2011 by stanno
Guest Jai Cee Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 Just performed this mod on a cheap bluetooth FM transmitter with USB port which was having trouble keeping the OSF at full charge and success its now AC charging. Now I just need to hope that it doesn't fry itself from the extra power draw.
Guest fLaMePr0oF Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 OK, if you want to try to perform microsurgery at that end of the lead. Nonetheless, it is still pins 2 and 3 to be shorted.... Works! Thnx :P Managed to successfully modify my cheap 1A charger (£2.99 including delivery for mains and car chargers - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_in...ucts_id=109935) while stuck in a hotel room with none of the usual tools to hand thanks to my pen knife, a small peice if silver foil, (cut from a paracetamol blister pack), and a small strip of adhesive matterial cut from the edge of a fabric sticking plaster :D I simply prised the charger open and shorted out the centre two pins of the USB connector solder joints by sticking a tiny peice of foil over them. Now when I check the battery status it says Charging (AC)
