Guest ED2O9 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 As a former Omnia II owner who felt that the Android world looked more promising, I thought I should drop back in and throw out a warning. While the Epic 4G has been an amazing phone, Android has really impressed me and Sprint service in my area has far exceeded what Verizon could provide, the simple fact remains that Samsung absolutely SUCKS in regards to phone support. Does this sound familiar?: - The GPS has numerous unresolved issues that impair it's ability to get a reliable lock. - The amount of available RAM is limiting and is less than what was advertised (due to a "fix" to the GPS). - Firmware updates are non-existent, while other manufacturers have updates available in a reasonable period of time. - Samsung cranks out new phones with the latest updates, while ignoring their existing customer base. So, the same cr@p you've been dealing with in the WinMo world is no different than Android. For those of you unfamiliar with all the bad press Samsung has been getting recently, here's the gist: In spite of the fact that Android 2.2 (Froyo) has been available since June, none of the Galaxy S phones have received updates. According to numerous sources, the Galaxy S line has the largest user base of any cell phone, yet Samsung seems more intent on releasing new phones with Froyo installed (like the Nexus S) than updating current phones. An update had been promised since September of 2010, with actual release dates in November and December announced through various sources... none of which occurred. It's 2011 and STILL no update on the horizon. The latest jab is this article: http://m.examiner.com/exSanFrancisco/pm_75...ntguid=WzckuLg6 which basically says that Samsung has delayed the release of updates because it "devalues" the newest phones. In short, I made the mistake to sticking with Samsung because I REALLY liked their hardware and felt confident that with such a huge customer base, they wouldn't possibly treat their Galaxy S phones that way they did the Omnia 2. I was wrong, and once I'm eligible for a new phone it will be anything other than a Samsung product. In the XDA Developers forums (which are a lot more hostile than here), people complain endlessly about Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc. support when in reality the common denominator is Samsung, and their greed practice of abandoning devices as quickly as possible. So, anyone planning on "making the switch" to Android, I'd HIGHLY recommend going with an HTC Evo. My brother-in-law loves his and it's had the latest firmware installed since it's release in June.
Guest y17dt Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 This is not the truth!!!! About Froyo! Found this on a german page.. As you can see, Froyo is provided by Samsung since August. Official Release via Kies in November 2010. Regards
Guest Lancez Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 the reason why north america didn't get froyo update is because of those greedy carriers who doses not want to waste their resources to provide updates to their existing customers. while they are trying to gain as much revenue as possible. why? you are under a 2years contract, what ya gonna do? I own a samsung captivate (galaxy s) and have updated with leaked froyo 2.2 few months ago, thanks to some inside men, and now im running European i9000 froyo 2.2.1 ROM with custom kernel. the rest of the world have already received froyo update while we are still receiving OTA update message for newer eclair. the problem is when samsung released updates they have to hand it over to carriers instead of us directly. from what I understand people should blame carries instead of samsung.
Guest Echo30 Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 I can see it being the carrier's fault. I'm not sure about other places, but Canadian carriers are awful to their existing customers. They are all smiles and deals when you're "signing up" (in quotations cause you could be an existing customer opening a new line), but as soon as you're an existing customer, they don't give a [EXPLETIVE DELETED] about you. At all. And to the OP: You're running Android on one of the most advanced smartphones available. Try not to get too upset over an update. As someone who is still running one of the worst OS's in human history I can tell you that I would love to have your problems.
