Description:

Android application, Back Light Killer for the Advent Vega.

hi ptbw,

i have tested your app with my archos 5 IT.

my hope was to find an app with this function:

the user can select to keep the backlight turn off (no screen off !!) after a specified amount of time that the device is not in use you can decide to turn on the backlight if the user taps the screen.

install works with no problem.

after a tap on the icon the device dimms to the lowest level a second tap on screen brings back the brigtness :)

but the timer enabled in settings does nothing.

what is meant with standby for Advent Vega ? cancels the standy all connects e.g. bluetooth ? or is only the screen dimmed ?

do you think its possibile do you progg an option in Back Light Killer : only dimm screen(no screen off ) after e.g. 1 min or 5min ?

i have tested a lot of apps but without success  you are my next hope :P

thanks in forward !

I'll find this out for myself in due course but until then I'll ask here. Is this just an app you launch? Is there a widget available that could be a 1x1 (on the desktop grid) icon to enable it? I was worried about the WiFi being killed when the device goes into standby until I was told about this. Thanks in advance for making my Vega work as I want it to.

Hi ptbw,

I love the backlightkiller app. Come in really handy for daily use.

Is it possible to run the backlightkiller without blanking off the screen?

I like the hdmi mirroring function of the advent vega, but when playing media on the TV, i rather have the vega screen blanked off.

Hi

I am surprised it does stop the hdmi output as all the app does is to dim the backlight. I havn't tried the hdmi out when its running.

If I get a chance I will see what I can do.

CM7 and corvus roms now should be able to leave the wifi on in standby so I had not planned any more updates to this, however this would be a very handy feature.

I agree with this post - great app etc & a nice-to-have would be different policies on battery & on charge

Sorry I did not spot this earlier.

It should be perfectly possible, I will see what I can do.

As I have mentioned the new ROM's might make this app redundant but I am glad to see so many people have found it useful.

Just plot a shortcut on your home screen, it does not have a widget.

Another post mentions using backlight killer to blank the screen when playing movies via the hdmi in which case I will need to rearrange the app to run in the background so I might add a widget or at least do something with a notification.

Further to my above post.....

Ideally you would want some background service running while you started the video playing application then after a minute or so kill the Vega screen. Then the service would respond to some other event to reset the screen when finished.

However an application can only change the brightness of its own window or it can set the system brightness that each application inherits when it starts, so its not going to be possible to set the brightness of another application that's already running or from a windowless service.

This is the reason why the application sets a full screen window on starting so it can then use the window to change the brightness, without the window the brightness can't be set.

I will still keep looking for a possible solution but one is not currently available through the Android API.

Cheers

Thanks ptbw,

I think i saw a prog in the android market to dim the screen: Screen filter.

Kind of use your program while downloading, then use the screen filter while connecting it to a TV.

Thanks again for the great app.

Yep i just installed Screen Filter thinking that it'd dim the Vega screen and leave the HDMI on normal brightness, but it doesn't :).
