Can I installa rom if the power on button doesn't work?

On my GT540 the buttons all work except for the power on button. I can only turn it on by plugging into a usb connection and forcing a usb reset.I want to upgrade it to 2.3 but am I right in thinking that I will be unable to without a working power button as I think it only resets with a usb connection due to a rom bug?

If you need to get into fastboot, just keep holding in the Camera button and plug in the USB Cable at the same time.

For recovery, just do the same but hold the Home button instead.
