Advice re rom installation

Hi, I am new to Android and need some help. I am thinking of getting a new Orange San Fransisco and want to unlock it and debrand it (I assune this is what installing a new rom means?) However I have been reading the dire warnings about attempting this on phones that are Gen 2 and am confused.I hope someone can answer the following questions

I assume that a brand new phone will be Gen 2? purely because it's new. Is this correct?

If so can these Gen 2 phones be unlocked and have new roms installed at all?

If they can is there a step by step guide to tell me what I can install and how to do it?

Lastly, if I can install a new rom on a Gen2 phone do I need to unlock it first or afterwards?

I'm a newbie to and I'm a bit disappointed that newbie questions don't seem to get answered on here.

Don't assume a new phone will be Gen 2. Mine is only a week old and I found it was Gen 1. Instructions on finding out which one you have are here:-
