[ROM][GEN2]CyanogenMod 7 (Android 2.3.7)

Hi tsddave, the problem here, is that this thread is specifically for Cyanogen's Blade ROM, but there isn't an area for Cyanogen based questions and chat. So they all come to this thread, inevitable.

Anil.

Sure I understand that and that isnt off topic.

Off topic for example is talking about the zte phone within an unrelated thread.

Maybe its just the ex moderator in me!

To the ones having random reboots, do you use any of the rendering effects?

How is the battery life of cm7 now compared to gsf as this is the only reason I do not use cm7? And yes you may say try it yourself, but if anyone has tried a recent version of cm7 and gsf could they please take the time to write a short reply?

Thanks in advance, Ben.

I find it pretty good on N136, maybe a bit worse than GSF. Your experience may vary since everyone's usage and apps installed are different though, so you do need to try it yourself to really know how well it fares.

Hi Ben, I tried GSF a few Beta's back, now I am using N136+ by sej7278. I get a full day no problem with heavy-moderate use. I get 2 days if I just use email and a bit of browsing. The features in CM7 really make it a no brainer for me. A LOT of folks have talked about battery life of ROM's lately. The previous battery problems with CM7 are all but gone. Unless you can't get to a charger every night, N136+ is excellent.

I hope this helps you. Anil,

Ok thank you very much for your very swift reply! That gives me a rough idea and I may now go back and try cm7 for a bit :)

Thank you also Anil! As I was unsure if the battery problems had gone - the reason why I switched to GSF in the first place! Yes cm7 does have features I miss so I may try it again, maybe the latest nightly 142?

No problems Ben, I can't vouch for N142, but N136+ is perfect for me, I am very happy.

Have fun. Anil.

Please clarify me in here: are you sying that if I use the APN app to configure MMS APN and at the same time "de-configure" (add the #)

the DATA APN, and simultaneously ENABLE the "Data Enable" option that will make MMS's work without spending money on data?

In theory: yes. That is exactly what should happen.

In practice: it doesn't work! Why? Lets see if we can find out.

If the only APN that is disabled is the Internet APN, then the MMS should go through. But somehow, with CyanogenMOD, this does not happen.

Before, while on stock rom (2.1) I used APNdroid to configure my MMS APN, but had "Data Enabled" OFF and still had no problem receiving/sending MMS...

I also read reports that for some people, the APN toggle apps like APN Portugal worked! But I don't know if they were using CM!

There might be several possibilities: Depending on the case, this might or not be the thread to discuss this!

There are different roms.

1) Community based Roms (like CyanogenMOD)

2) Carrier/Vendor Stock Rom.

Considering that CyanogenMOD roms are created from Android Original Source Code, and that we can't send MMS with the Internet APN off

can we assume that this is as intended in the google source code?

Does it work with other user/community roms?

This would be a very important information to see if CyanogenMOD changed/or hasn't changed anything that is affecting this.

If it only works with carrier roms, maybe this was something altered by them. Especially the feature of sending MMS (in the end, mms are internet data) even with Data disabled.

I'll spin off a new thread in the General Section to find out use cases and see if we can pin point the differences and find a way to solve this.

Please pass by this thread and state your known cases. I would be very appreciated!

in the compilation stage you can apply my patch which just sets a few booleans in frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml

if you mean how do you enable them from one of my builds, then you got to settings->cyanogenmod settings->tablet settings->select softbuttons or something (i've not got the phone to hand) and then just tick the ones you want.

if you hang on an hour or so i'll have n142+ with my own kernel (and softbuttons) for download

The sad news is, I don't even know what your tweaks are, or, what special sauce you use. But the fact of it is, sej7278 is a brand I have used and trust! :)

Just backed up my current ROM in anticipation. Thanks.

Anil.

Sej, why is n142+ only 47MB? Is that normal?

For the truly experimental amongst you, I've built a n142+ which is nightly 142 plus one of the changes which will come in n143 (i missed the last 4 as they got merged as i was compiling!) and of course, enabled softbuttons B)

The main difference is that it has Tom_G's kernel as of Friday, but custom compiled by me from source, rather than patching Tom_G's binary, so it will have my name in the kernel info.

There's nothing particularly new in the kernel for Blades, mostly its v9 tablet stuff and the lcd fix for the newer blade 2.2's, but its more of an exercise in being able to compile the kernel and understand which modules are/aren't required etc.

I've been running the same kernel with n139 for two days overclocked to 710MHz without any problems, and been running this build for about 10mins - great quality control eh? :D

Yes,I want to learn how to enable softkeys in the compile stage, but have no knowledge of how this is done

cd frameworks/base/core/res/res/values

git --apply /var/tmp/softbuttons.patch (or wherever you saved it)

or open config.xml in a text editor and change this bool to true in config.xml
<bool name="cm_default_has_soft_buttons">false</bool>
and these four to false (so they don't all display by default):
<bool name="cm_default_show_soft_home">true</bool>

<bool name="cm_default_show_soft_menu">true</bool>

<bool name="cm_default_show_soft_back">true</bool>

<bool name="cm_default_show_soft_quick_na">true</bool>

maybe have a look around my blog where i've documented the custom kernel compile, cm7 compiling, git patching, setting up linux with the sdk/emulator, writing edify scripts, signing zips........
