Guest t0mm13b Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Right, guys, to allay the fear of bricking handsets with the conversion from Gen1 to Gen2, I was on IRC and did a live "show" in front of others in the channel on the conversion process. The log of the actual process is pastebin'd Basically was on CM7 RC4, Gen1.... Following the steps, download three files restore_stock_recovery.zip, the gen2_136Mb_system_no_oem.zip (both from this posting) and the update_cm7_signed.zip (from here). which was fresh off the press...unzip the file gen2_136mb_system_no_oem_2mb_cache.zip onto a folder in WindowsRun driverinstaller.exe to install the drivers for the flashing process.Copy update-cm-7.0.0-Blade-signed.zip to the root of the sdcard on your Blade.Copy restore_stock_recovery.zip to the root of your sdcard on the BladeDo a Nandroid backup of your current Gen1 installation.Flash the restore_stock_recovery.zipRebootHold down the vol key until FTM appearsrun download_nochecksGen2.exe (This is from the first step where you unzipped the file gen2_136mb_system_no_oem_2mb_cache.zip)When the download_nochecksGen2.exe's window appears, plug in the cable and click on the Start button within that window, this will now flash and resize partitions and make it gen2.When the dialog box 'Download successful' appears, the clockwork recovery is back in place, at this stage, you're now in Gen2.Restore from nandroid backupFinally, flash the update_cm7_signed.zip which is now Gen2To confirm, run mr.pigfish and the pig will oink and squeal at ya and say Gen2Celebrate with a pint or a smoke or whateveh is it ya do - lulz! Ok... I will keep you informed of how it goes... I would expect that at some stage after this weekend when a nightly comes out it will be in gen2 style, so will do a clean data/cache then... :)
Guest mELIANTE Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 No need for the nandroid backup/restore if you want a clean installation right?
Guest t0mm13b Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 No need for the nandroid backup/restore if you want a clean installation right? Correct :)
Guest hecatae Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 [*]Do a Nandroid backup of your current Gen1 installation. there is no reason for this as trying to restore a gen1 back up after upgrading to gen2 will not work
Guest PeteBest Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Thanks for the little guide, might be doing this at the weekend so good to have a nice easy to follow guide ready... Will the 136Mb system partition be future proof? Guessing that CM7 won't fit into the older 128mb converted systems so just wondering if it should have been made around 145mb so there's a bit more leeway in the future... Thanks again for the guide :)

Guest PeteBest Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Yeah I found 136MB to be enough for CM7 system + gapps. Fits without problem. Thanks but, I knew it would be enough for CM7 currently, I was more concerned about future proofing it with a bit more space than it needed so I wouldn't have to mess around with the partitions again.
Guest JimJam707 Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Nice :) I'll do it when I get home :)
Guest zne Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 (edited) there is no reason for this as trying to restore a gen1 back up after upgrading to gen2 will not work Well, if you first do a backup, and then all the steps. then restore and after that flash the new gen2 cm. all your data will still be there. Guest hecatae Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Well, if you do a restore and then flash the new gen2 without reboot.. all your data will still be there. the gen2 executable wipes all your partitions when you run the flasher, it also modifies the partition layout, so there is no data there
Guest zne Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 the gen2 executable wipes all your partitions when you run the flasher, it also modifies the partition layout, so there is no data there But the backup is kept on the sd-card.. it will restore everything back to the partitions on the internal memory.
Guest hecatae Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 But the backup is kept on the sd-card.. it will restore everything back to the partitions on the internal memory. well okay your choice, but it wont be a clean install.
Guest targetbsp Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 (edited) there is no reason for this as trying to restore a gen1 back up after upgrading to gen2 will not work The backup is restored at a later stage in the guide and then updated to gen 2 so you keep all your apps? Unless I'm mis-reading it... [edit] Oops. Late reply. Opened the tab a long while before reading it lol. :) Edited April 15, 2011 by targetbsp
Guest zne Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 well okay your choice, but it wont be a clean install. That is correct..
Guest reluctant_traveller Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 I'm off home this weekend, will run various radio signal strength tests on my Gen1 CM7 install. Reason for this is that I live in a valley that has appalling signal strength unless I am in the loft conversion. Occasionally we get a signal on ground floor, but have to use speakerphone so that the phone is not disturbed and we lose signal! Once I have recorded some average power readings, I will carry out the Gen2 conversion and see if it really does help with signal strength or if it's just a placebo effect from a more accurate signal bar. Fingers crossed I say!
