Strange behaviour with new LCD in Vega

Shielding is done but to little effect. Ive discovered it may be the digitizer ribbon cable. I think theres some breaks in the tracks where it connects to the motherboard. I must have damaged it when Ive been taking it apart.

Its fiddly, close work but repairable. Ill strip back the plastic and bridge the breaks and see what happens. I have nothing to lose now.

Thanks for all your help guys!!

Do keep us informed  I am living vicariously through your own endeavours as I have failed in my own attempts to source a replacement touchscreen for my cracked baby :o

Hi all,

I've been reading through this thread as I've got a similar issue.

Today I got a second hand Vega from ebay, minus the screen. I ordered the compatible new screen, and set about putting it in. Once the back was off I removed all the screws, detached a few cables and lifted the circuit board to get to the screen. I cleaned the back of the touch screen, inserted the new LCD and put everything back together. Nothing.

So, I took everything apart again, reseated all the cables (the LCD cable was not inserted properly) and fitted the touch screen cable back into its housing. Put everything back together again, and booted up.

This time the Vega booted up in the EULA, but the touch screen is a bit squiffy. Holding the vega in Landscape, the screen reacts to the left most inch only. Rather frustratingly, this means I cannot click on the OK button on the EULA to get into the calibration app

Since I'm getting _some_ reaction from the screen I'm going to assume that I've got the cable inserted correctly. I cleaned out the back of the touch screen again, but still no joy.

One thought I had was that the screen was damages from one inch in, but there's nothing immediately visible on inspection; no cracks, no broken lines.

If anyone has any suggestions/comments/howls of derision I would be most happy to hear :)

Thanks, Ian

I am not sure whether this would work, but you might want to try a USB Mouse to get through the EULA and on to the calibration app.

Hi Kids,

A wee update - everything is working now.

Here's what I did; after reading through every post about touch screens I could find I cracked the Vega open again. I removed the twelve screws, detached the monitor and battery cables, the speaker cable and the touch screen ribbon and lifted the motherboard up and away from me (pivoting on the screw holes).

I then lifted the screen up in the same way so I had access to the touchscreen. I wiped it down again, being very careful to remove any of the dust that was collecting in the corners. Since my screen failed one inch from the edge, I paid special attention to this area, making sure that everything was clean. I got a can of compressed air and blasted everything for a few seconds.

After making sure that the inside of the screen was clean I laid the LCD into place, and then reassembled the mother board.

The connector ribbon from the touch screen is the beast. It's a strange connector (at least as I could see) - there is a small female connector with a black 'thing' (for want of a better word) which moves in and out about 2mm, which locks the ribbon in place. I moved the thing to the extended position, and slid the ribbon connector under it. There's a small black rubber thing on the ribbon which allows you to get some purchase, and I held it in place until I slid the black thing into the lock position. I reconnected the monitor and batter leads and then rebooted.

This time I had much better screen coverage, and was able to get past the EULA. I managed to get into the Apps section after much tapping on the icon, and then ran the calibration utility in the TPUtils app. Ten seconds later and everything is peachy.

Now, how do I load up R8?

Hope that helps, Ian

Hi Ian,

thought I recognised your name.

You bought that one from my auction. I know what you mean with connector as I was terrified when I put it back together after removing the screen originally and was getting intermittent screen presses but managed to reseat the connector and it all worked again as I unlocked it and got some pictures of it working for the auction via the HDMI lead.

I had to take it all apart again before I shipped it as I had left the screen cable flying around loose under the metal framework and was worried that it might damage something or get damaged when being shipped.

I will forward you over the invoice via email as forgot to print a copy out and put it in the box. v.1.09 was put on it along with CWM.
