My vote goes to Swedish Spring, its very stable and a great ROM for a beginner. Nothing wrong with CM7 either.

Er, sorry to come back and ask some stupid questions, but just where do I start with this whole "modding" thing? Should I install Mr. Pigfish and go from there? Do I need to remove all of my Orange apps before I think about another ROM? Cheers : )

Mr Pigfish will tell you if you have a gen1 (most likely) or gen2 phone. This will determine what software you need to get started with custom roms. I used this guide: orangesanfrancisco.co.uk when I first started.

Make sure to read the stuff about doing backups, before starting the section on installing custom roms. You dont need to unlock your phone, or remove orange apps, I think the custom roms do that for you IIRC. My suggestion would be to start with Swedish Spring (froyo) rom, before you play with CM7 (gingerbread) rom. Follow each step carefully.

Swedish Spring for me too, very stable.

Just a quick question to those that know more than me though (which will be a very, very long list)...I have a Gen1 and before putting SS on last week upgraded my old v2 clockwork to 3.0.2.8 (i didn't know that anything over 3.0.2.4 wouldn't work)....BUT, I've had no problems whatsoever.

Have I been lucky, or are problems around the corner? :)

Hi DaveMac, you have Recovery version 3.0.2.8 working on a handset with a Gen 1 memory layout? If that's the case good on you, I don't see any issues for you. It's just that Recovery above 3.0.2.4 is only for handsets with the Gen 2 memory layout. Anything above 3.0.2.4 will not boot into recovery for my Gen 1 handset.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Anil.

PS. Perhaps your handset has the Gen 2 memory layout? The apps "Mr. Pigfish" and "Blade Buddy" will be able to tell you.

Hi Anil

No I definately have a Gen 1. I've had my SF since October last year, and I have checked with said Mr Fish :)

I've been through a few ROM's, one of Paul's to begin with, then Seb de-orangeanated, JJ and now SS.

Have to say all have been pretty good for me. I'm no expert by any means, hence my question!

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,

That's interesting. I wonder why I can't get recovery above 3.0.2.4 to work? It seems what I have been told has been incorrect, 3.0.2.8 will work on a Gen 1 handset. If you have time and don't mind, could you boot into Recovery and just confirm the version you are using. Mine is ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4 but in the Rom Manager app it says I am running 3.0.1.4.

Sorry, I am just being geeky.

Thanks. Anil

Just rebooted into recovery, definitely v3.0.2.8 :)

Just also dialled up Mr Fish again (in case I was drunk the first time I did it, or imagined it  ) ...I definitely have Gen1

Again interesting. Where did you get the update to 3.0.2.8, and how did you apply the update? I know how it's done but I want to know if you did it the way I would.

Thanks Dave.

I got 3.0.2.8 from a link on here, can't think which thread it was on. From a trusted source though...might have been posted by Steven Harper.

Downloaded the .zip file, put it on my sd card, then applied it through my older version of clockwork ( think I had v 2.5.0.8 but not sure).

Hi Dave, damn it's late (2.20am in Italy) but this is interesting. Did you get the update from here?

http://android.podtwo.com/recovery/

And did you apply an update .zip or the entire 3.0.2.8 recovery .zip?

Thanks Dave.

Anil.

Yes very late, we're an hour behind you here in the UK, but I have a meeting at 8:30am

I think that's where I got it from. The 3.0.2.8 for the Gen1 zip

I applied it via the entire recovery zip, not the update.zip :)

Yes, Seb's link...I did get it from there.

This one "recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1-update_signed"

Hi Dave, I hope you got to your meeting this morning. So you applied the update .zip, I did the same thing and mine wouldn't boot into recovery. Did you wipe anything beforehand? I know I'm grasping at straws now.

Don't use "apply update .zip".

To upgrade recovery just use "install zip from SD card" while in recovery, and navigate to the zip file you want to install, same way you flash a rom and theme through there.

If you can't boot into recovery, then go download rom manager and scroll down, there should be a list of old recoverys you can flash from there to get clockwork back.

Hi Fou-lu,

I'm a bit confused as to what you mean. There is one .zip file,

recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1-update_signed.zip,

and it's an update file. I installed this in recovery using the "install zip from sd card" option, but it wouldn't then boot into recovery. I tried the same thing with 3.0.2.4 and everything works as expected.

The other file,

recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img is an image file.

I can't apply a .img file in recovery can I? So I am a bit lost, sorry.

Anil.

Yes made it...to find it had been cancelled at the last minute!!!

I wiped cache & did factory reset, then installed the zip...NOT through the update.zip function though, browsed to the file then installed it.

Hi Dave and Fou-lu,

I just applied the recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1-update_signed.zip, not the .img file and I rebooted into Recovery whilst in Recovery and it rebooted with no problems. I rebooted the phone and chose boot into recovery from Rom Manager app and... It worked. Running 3.0.2.8 recovery.

I have no idea what 3.0.2.8 can do that 3.0.2.4 couldn't, but either way it works and makes me a bit sad for spending time on this, this morning with Dave.

Thanks to you both.

Anil.

less features, less themes , Gingerbread has better copy n paste with tab things to help where to put the cursor:

App and Game performance is better in Gingerbread, and videos.

I've just found out my phone is a "Gen 1" What are the best Froyo and Gingerbread ROMS for my Blade/OSF? Should I venture into Gingerbread territory? Cheers : )

The main question is.

2.3 Speed, features, performance. (battery about 1 day [depends on usage of course]

2.2. Stable, great battery life. (battery 2-3 days)

Battery life is beginning to get better with 2.3, in my opinion, lasting maybe 2 days at a time for me now.

Its all down to your own priorities. Stability and battery life over more customization, functionality and performance

Thanks for the quick reply. Just how much do you have to use your phone for the battery to last one day with 2.3? (I'm have the same problem with my Nokia 5800 that I installed a custom ROM on) Can I upgrade a 2.3 ROM after I install one on my phone? (Or do I have to reinstall everything afterwards?)
