I'm actually pretty pleased with their support. I agree with the people about Dell's update release. The Streak was released with 1.6. Dell released 2.1, then 2.2, then 2.2.2. I hear they're even working on gingerbread too, but that was delayed because of Google's slowness to release the source code or something, I'm not sure. Yes other companies have released gb sooner, but I'd rather wait for a more reliable ROM. Look at the statistics of Android OS usage. Most people are on 2.2. Not a lot on 2.3 yet.

Don't get pissed at Dell cause AT&T is slow. Don't get pissed at Dell cause Netflix doesn't work.

As far as hardware support, I've had to make one call to Dell cause of a faulty screen (no I didn't drop it). After a 20 minute call they shipped out a replacement with a return label for my busted one. They supplied tracking info and when the status showed "delivered" they even called me to see if I got it.

But... that's just my opinion...

People need to find other things to think about. My phone does everything that I want it to do (except Netflix), and is fast and responsive enough for me to use it as my business phone/tablet. I'm not making an argument for Dell here, but just mobile tech in general. We have a whole generation of phone nerds who think of nothing but what their NEXT phone will look like. Android Central has a team of trolls pressing refresh for hours a day to see the next mobile device; people trade in their devices every 6 months now...seriously...get a life.

Which phone came out with Android 1.6 and has upgraded to 2.3? Honestly 1.6 to multiple versions of 2.2 is about all you are going to get in todays world. Anyways you plan on holding on to your Streak longer than two years? Bought mine in Aug 10 and the second next generation Steak comes out I am going to buy it. Most likely well before Aug 2012, guess it is really true, you just can't make people happy, they always have to complain no matter how good they got it.

Yes Dell released 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, & 2.2.2. But they never released the lib.audio source and therefore we can't have AOSP. End of story. My next phone is going to be another HTC.

Call WAAAAAHHHMbulance already!

So go buy an HTC then and quit your bitching!

Not that you cry babies won't be saying the same thing about the HTC in a year on some other board but at least we won't have to keep seeing you guys whining rants about how HTC is better pop to the top of the unread pile every couple of days and then they can be the ones to tell you to piss off.

Some peoples kids.

This is what you are crying about? Do you even know what AOSP is? If this whole rant is about this, God help us all, I hope you haven't reproduced yet, the world doesn't need your genetics in the gene pool.....So we don't get full working version of GingerBread, however Thanks to Steve Hyde, Fards and few other folks there is a beta version of 2.3.3 on the streets (with some help from folks much smarter than me, perhaps it could be full working version). Steve is currently working 1.9.1, there are 1.9.0, 1.2 Simple Streak, and 1.3 GHZ Super Streak stable and Running full Ubuntu ROMs available to you. I know Dell promised folks that they would work with them on getting 2.3 on the streets, but if the guy who holds your proprietary audio source tells you, you can't release it, than you can't release it. At the end of the day, what do you really want?

When your contract is up go to a smaller screen and cry how small it is compared to the Streak, you will never be happy.

"AOSP" is like saying "BASIC" or "DOS" or C++. It means that AOSP ROMs are not based on any specific release or particular phone programming. Vanilla, cupcake, eclair, froyo, (AND SOON!!) gingerbread, were all built from coding off the AOSP platform. Doesn't make any AOSP ROMs lesser (or better) than any other ROM. Just means the dev built the ROM "from scratch," if you will. It's not a modded existing ROM, it's completely original. Frozen Yogurt, for instance, is an outstanding AOSP ROM... Kind of like a "new" phone.

Android Open Source Project will not compile for the Streak due to the lack of lib drivers. I want Dell to release those drivers. They said they would, but have not.

It may be worth mentioning that the Streak has 2 developers currently with a handful of ROMs. StreakDroid & SimpleStreak are the only fully working ROMs. StreakDroid 2, CM6, MIUI, and StreakSense are all crippled by lack of audio and network support.

Just as a counter point, a list of custom ROMs for the N1:

http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/nexus-o...-roms-list.html

You are right on some points. The Streak is a unique form factor. The wow factor of Ubuntu is a little lost on me as I had that running on my Nexus One almost 12 months ago. The Streak can not live to its full potential because of these licensing issues. If our power as consumers is to vote with our wallet, then I choose to not purchase the Dell Streak 2 or Opus one or whatever. I'm pretty sure this is the correct thread to bitch about it.

Thank you for your insights.

My issue is with premature and unnecessary obsolescence. The Streak hardware is perfectly capable of running Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Ice Cream. And I fully expect it to do so. If it doesn’t then I am entitled to complain.

The Apple iPhone has demonstrated that the latest versions of the operating system will run on older hardware. So there is little excuse here for Dell not to see through with the Streak’s capability.

My experience of Nokia and Maemo is that older hardware was excluded from the newer software. This is one reason why I shall avoid Nokia’s products for the foreseeable. Ultimately, as a consumer this is the only way that I can make my displeasure known.

In the meantime, forums like this provide the vehicle whereby we can give the manufacturers fair warning.

Always assuming that they are interested in what we think of course. In reality I suspect that they couldn’t care less. Why should Dell worry if I never buy another one of their products. Nokia certainly didn't.

At the end of the day Dell have no obligation to upgrade the Streak 5 any further (Already updated it 3 major times, not including bug fixes)

After owning several Android phones Dell has supported this one the furthest and longest.

Note that HTC has only upgraded the Desire 3 major times too

Android is an OS. I don't see Dell updating every PC they sell to the later versions of Windows. Or the later versions of Ubuntu for that matter.

Again this really falls back to google to enable android to be updated OTA without manufacturer support. It is based on unix/linux after all :)

Hear Hear!!

On another note, some good news / rumor. Perhaps Dell does listen to all our belly aching  Rumor has it that they are working on HC for Streak 5 and 7.

Ok. So I suppose that would be amazing, to have yet another major release for the Streak. Of course, it is only an unconfirmed rumor at this point.

Says who? In my opinion they have, if for no other reason then to support their customer base and as a customer I expect it. Apple does it with the iPhone. Wouldn't Dell just love to have the iPhone's success. Well then this is a useful lesson for Dell to learn.

My Dell PC hardware originally came with Windows XP, I upgraded that to Windows Vista and the same hardware is now running Windows 7.

Also my Dell hardware has supported all versions of Linux from Ubuntu 8.04 and is now running Ubuntu 11.04

This experience makes my point regarding my reasonable expectation of obsolescence proofing.

What exactly is it that you are trying to say?

My point is that andorid is licensed software, as is Windows. Forgive me if I am wrong but MICROSOFT developed Vista and Windows 7 to be compatible with YOUR hardware. Unless of course you got a version from Dell where they patched it to be compatible with their drivers and built it from source (Not just pre-installed some bloat-ware)

In the same way that the Ubuntu team continues to support a massive range of hardware

Google develop Android to be compatible with 2? Devices (Nexus one and Nexus S). They leave it up to the manufacturers to "port" the OS to their devices. No matter how much I love android it is, at the moment, a flawed idea.

Note that Dell have upgraded 3 times "out of the goodness of their heart". Business / PR moves aside they are not obligated to make any updates

About Apple.. Their older devices don't receive the new updates and some of the features are removed for some devices. But at the end of the day you get what you pay for, Apple clearly state that you will receive regular updates.. Still doesn't justify that huge price tag mind
