Building kernel - how do I get wifi working?

In order to get a usb ethernet dongle working (no wifi in the house due to tinfoil hat concerns in the family), I have learned how to config and build the kernel. It almost works - I can surf using the browser but gmail, gtalk and market don't work.

I am hoping this is related to breaking wifi in my build.

So I'm asking for advice on how to build wifi for the vega - how do I build it and how do I get it into the vega the right way? So far I've just been replacing zImage and ar6000.ko in Buzz' kernel installer, but it does not seem to work.

I have based the kernel on this, adding these options to the advent_vega_defaconfig:

CONFIG_USB_NET_AX8817X=y

CONFIG_USB_NET_CDC_EEM=y

CONFIG_USB_NET_MCS7830=y

CONFIG_ATH6K=m (I think I read that this has to be a module)
