They use bits as the base not bytes its what the two terms mean its actually more relevant in data transfer rates and statistics you would not use it for working with an actual machine I never suggested otherwise. You can apply a base 10 scaling when dealing with bits at least in statistical terms if not in usage you can't do that with a byte as its a different base. Its a human issue not a computer one but thats how its justified its not strictly true either since a megabit isn't the same as a byte in the first place but thats how manufacturers justify applying those measurements to storage quantities. Also don't confuse SI and metric they aren't the same lots of units are SI and metric is one of them SI is the collecting of standardised scientific measurements they are not all "metric" or operate on the same base decibels are probably the most obvious example of a non "metric" scale SI unit.

And like I said non issue since in this case its about addressable memory not reporting issues that wouldn't be a factor anyway.

Also if you are going to quote don't mash two together my post was in response to the one above it context is important. Part of what I was talking about was the use of mega, giga etc again context important.

Sorry I may have got you wrong warriorscot, I think we are all going on a tangent from the original question and there are so many splits it`s hard to know what you was replying to.

I`m saying why the 1024 for K in computers and not 1000.

(and a meg being 1024 * 1024 not 1000 * 1000 )

If the vega had 512 Mb ( bits ) of ram that would be 64 M bytes of ram, so that is not actually relevant in this case as it is not the issue.

i only just noticed this thread, i actually knew the answere to this lol, i have the LG optimus 2x with the same tegra 2, the tegra 2 GPU takes 128mb. Leaving the user with whatever is left over as "useable" ram.

There is a "ram hack" on the LG o2x thread that gives you back 64mb of ram, as it apparently the tegra 2 only requires 64mb of ram, but 128 is set as default.

Tried searching for this hack in the LG thread but couldn't find it so any chance you can post us the link please? If we can really save 64mb of RAM shouldn't the Vega gurus like Paul, Corvus & newbe5 be incorporating this hack into their ROM builds ?

Anyone had any further development regarding this LG hack been adapted for the Vega.

This needs a kernel change and so you will need to have someone like Corvus take it up. Not sure that will happen currently as they are tied up with Vegacomb.
