Guest johnnyp Posted October 12, 2011 Report Posted October 12, 2011 Hi all Some help needed please? I am a new owner of a Vega and read that the stock firmware is a bit rubbish. Before I start playing with it I was just wondering what is the best and simplest option with updating to other firmware. I have read about vegacombe. Is this any good and will it run without any problems? Also as this is my first android bit I have no idea about rooting so will need to read up on this too. I'm a bit of an iphone fan so only really know about ios and jailbreak. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks

I'm a bit of an iphone fan so only really know about ios and jailbreak. Appreciate any help on this. Thanks Hi and welcome. The thread on tablet ROMs has all the lowdown on Vegacomb including known issues. In summary, here's how to install. The thread also has all of the downloads you need. 1. Install modded stock ROM v2. To do this, you will need to be able to get into flash mode using the instructions and USB drivers found at myadventvega.co.uk. This is the only difficult bit for noobs. Search here for YAUDIG and/or AUDI (now incorporated into Vega Tools) if you need help with the drivers. Note that this is a complete flash and will therefore wipe everything. It is rooted so nothing for you to do there. 2. Copy the Vegacomb install (9n) and update 3 to your sdcard. 3. Run the recovery app which modded stock includes to boot into Clockwordmod (CWM) (also included). 4. Use CWM to wipe all caches (including Dalvik in the advanced menu) and do a factory reset. 5. Use CWM to install 9n then, without rebooting, install update 3. 6. Reboot and enjoy (after having first satisfied yourself that the known issues are acceptable to you ;) If not, Corvus5 ROM is recommended). Good luck
Guest worto03 Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 Hi, There is also a good video on youtube - search for - how to install vegacomb - it's a little out of date but only in respect to version numbers. Also do a search round here for vega tools v4 it will help you no end getting the drivers sorted and knowing when your in the right mode for doing certain things. This tablet was my first android device too - it's a great starting point because however badly you seem to mess up you can always get it back to stock and go from there with patience and sometimes help from here!
Guest johnnyp Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 Thanks for your responses but I'm still a little confused with all the different Roms. I have found vegacomb, corvus5, cm7 and modaco r8 Any ones you recommend with no issues?
Guest xathras Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 (edited) Thanks for your responses but I'm still a little confused with all the different Roms. I have found vegacomb, corvus5, cm7 and modaco r8 Any ones you recommend with no issues? I don't think any of the custom have no issues. modaco r8 was the first of the custom ROMs and is based on Android 2.2 (Froyo). It has largely been replaced by corvus5, which is also based on Froyo. Many people like it as it probably has the fewest "issues" remaining, and gamers appear to like it particularly because the accelerometer works well. cm7 is based on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). This Rom also has it's fans and it worked well for me for several weeks before Vegacomb became available. However, in my opinion it's difficult to see it as anything other than a stop-gap between Android 2.2 and 3.0 (Honeycomb). Vegacomb is an unofficial port of Honeycomb 3.2. Unless you are a gamer this is probably the one to go for. It is the most recent of the custom ROMs. It still has some rough edges to sort out but all the hardware in the Vega now works to some degree. The proper answer to your question is probably: "Try them all". This is easy to do on the Vega. Edited October 13, 2011 by xathras
Guest AlbaJoe Posted October 13, 2011 Report Posted October 13, 2011 I am pretty much in the same boat as the op so will join in here rather than duplicating the post assuming the op doesnt mind. You mention that you cant screw things up but after only recently doing the vegacomb bricked a vega i.e. screen was completely unresponsive. Is there precautionary measures that need to be carried out beeforee starting on this journey?
Guest stevesilk51 Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 I am pretty much in the same boat as the op so will join in here rather than duplicating the post assuming the op doesnt mind. You mention that you cant screw things up but after only recently doing the vegacomb bricked a vega i.e. screen was completely unresponsive. Is there precautionary measures that need to be carried out beeforee starting on this journey? As Simonta has mentioned, numerous times before, "you cannot brick a Vega" Many have "tried", myself included, and failed to brick one so have no fear. So, read the posts on installing the roms, factory reset and wipe all caches and install away. As previously posted getting into recovery using correct key presses is the hardest part (you must persevere with this) and once you have ClockworkMod up and running it becomes very easy to try new roms until you find one you like. I've been using Vegacomb for a while and really impressed with it, the few problems have not affected how I use my vega at all. Good luck, the trip is worth it! Steve
Guest AlbaJoe Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 i managed to install it but i do have some issues- Android market is an issue now but i have also noticed even web browsing the screen takes an age refreshing i.e if u scroll down quickly the screen goes very block.
Guest johnnyp Posted October 15, 2011 Report Posted October 15, 2011 What did you install? After reading a load of posts I think I will go with Corvus 5.
Guest johnnyp Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 Installed Corvus 5 ok and running well. Anyone know how to read files from the USB port?
Guest Corporal Calamity Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Another newbie here - apologies for resurrecting an oldish thread but I thought it was better than starting a new one I've just bought a Vega for my sons Christmas present, he's 14 and will use it mainly for web browsing and youtube with the occasional game - he already has an ipod he uses for games so dont see this as a high priority for the Vega. He wants a handheld web browser with a bigger screen that can run Flash, but wants to use it rather than tinker with it - I'm the tinkerer in the house so if he gets on well with his I might buy myself one to experiment on :) . So, for us the key thing is stability and usability rather than having the very latest features available I have a couple of questions - - is Corvus 5 still the 'best' option for him or will Vegacomb be stable for what he wants to do - where can I get modded stock ROM v2 from - i've tried searching but cant find a link to it Thanks
Guest IanTurner Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 It's all in this thread, you'll just have to sign up to that forum to see the links, it's where all the info is on vegacomb anyway
Guest Corporal Calamity Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Thanks for the link - theres lots of useful info there
