just use the default rom that it comes with, it'll be fine ;)

Quite. You often see people on here wanting to mod new phones for their girlfriends, etc when they would no doubt be totally satisfied with how it was supplied.

I do agree with you, in that the supplied ROM, once de-branded and de-cluttered etc is an excellent starting point for people and often can suffice their needs.

some of us, myself included, are often used to flashing their ROM's and might not have even tried the stock version which comes with the phone. I'm using Elitemovil's excellent ROM and I do like the aesthetics and the ability to both underclock and overclock it, which you can't do with the std ROM.

Hi,

Good point, but I don't want to mod a phone to impress a girlfriend :)

Reasons for wanting a different rom are - in no order of importance:

Because I'd like to decide what is on my phone - not someone else

DSP Manager - my Koss Porta Pros are too bass without it and very few of the free music players have decent equalization (I've tried quite a few)

An application list not already filled with loads of junk

Remove all traces of orangeness icons, backgrounds etc

Familiarity with CM7 (it's on my HTC,) - I prefer the layout, easier access to 'manage applications' and the home screen layout

I also wanted it unlocked as I don't want to be on orange and root access so I can use titanium to restore.

I'm sure there are other reasons as well and to be fair to custom ROMs (and not misguide anyone) while I'm very impressed with CM7, I haven't tried any of the other custom ROMs.

Maybe I should have tried all the other custom ROMs first and then decided which one to go for, but I wanted a working phone.....

I reckon a lot of guys buy them for their other halves not to impress them but to get the chance to bugger about with them first and I can understand that. Of course, if things don't go to plan then you'll definitely not be impressing anyone. I would have added a 'wink' in here but they all look the same <would have inserted something else here but they all look the same> Could get into an endless loop here ;-)

It's much better to buy yourself a higher spec phone and give 'her' the one you've already been buggering about with...oops..optimising....

So buying a phone gives you a better chance of buggering your other half

Yes, change the wallpaper and the ring tones and get some nice wrapping paper for it :D

Trying to decide which ROM is best for my purposes and I think I'll be swayed more by performance than anything else. I'll also be quite happy if I never have to mod anything again, given the unlocking process was nerve wracking enough for this novice. Can any of you techies please give me a ROM recommendation based on the following. I'll be using my MC mainly for:

1) Internet access - so fast reliability required - Gmail open nearly all day

2) Skype - used for instant messages (and sometimes calls), so the app has to perform well enough

3) Wifi - will accessing internet mostly via wifi so need this working well

4) Battery life - the ROM which optimises this best would be good - unless a good app works the same on all ROMS?

5) Music - I plan to load up about 20GB of tunes, so need something that copes well with that. Keeping the FM radio would also be good.

6) MS Office docs and pdfs - ability to read, create and edit - not sure if this is just an app or whether some ROMs are better suited to this than others?

7) Tethering/Using a wifi hotspot - potentially useful so nice to have although not a prerequisite

8) Calls - the phone will be used overseas and the occasional call from the UK received, so signal boost might be helpful. Although not sure how good it is or how well it works, so far down the list of priorities

I was going to go with Atomic 2.3.5 but there still seems to be a lot of teething issues with the latest version. Anybody got any advice based on the above? Thanks.

Edited to say please don't suggest trying them all. These tutorials are far from idiot proof and when they go wrong, for someone who's following instructions without knowing what he's doing, you can end up in all sorts of a mess and scared the phone will be damaged, unsure of what to click, what to unplug, what to switch off etc...and what not to do. As it stands I can't even get ClockworkMod loaded (whatever that is), so after a custom ROM I'll be retiring!

When I read the last couple of pages of the atomic thread a day or so ago, bluetooth didn't seem to work, although it appears it has now been fixed. I also saw stuff like "Xt9 Keyboard force closes for me", "APK force closes as well", "When I turn on the camera I have vertical stripes across the display" and "no signal boost sorry".

I don't understand half of what's being said but it doesn't sound good. Also appeared to be a lot of "add-ons" to fix things but I have to admit that all that is completely over my head.

I thought I'd list my uses a couple of posts above and some kind techie could advise on what ROM might be suitable. But not in any rush for the answer until I get some tips on another thread about how to check if ClockworkMod installed properly. It stalled at green android screen whilst running 'install-recovery-windows.bat' from the post-unlock folder after completing the unlock tutorial. I removed the battery and stuck it back in and all seems OK but no idea if CM has loaded.
