Gen 3 has other radio firmware than gen 2, so If you flash a Gen 2 rom to a Gen 3 or vice versa you wont have signal. Gen 2 doesn't give more ram unless the ram was locked and yes you are right about other facts about gen 1. For now do not update to Gen 3, because there are only a couple of roms and there is no simple way to downgrade.
