About launchers:

I've used Trebuchet, Nova and Apex and here's my review.

Trebuchet is a very good launcher, but Nova and Apex, both have a few extra settings. Basicly all of them are very similar, but user experience is a lot different.

In my oppinion Trebuchet is the most fluid one but it has a flaw.

App drawer oppening speed!

While speed is normal, time that takes scrolling to be effective sometimes is way to long. Sometimes it takes more than 5 secs.

I dont use app drawer that much but it is just too anoying when I need it.

Then I started using Nova, and it also had a flaw. App drawer rendering while using card stack effect. (Yes that is the only one I like and I want to use) While using app drawer in horizontal mode it was smooth, but I got enough of that on LP :D, surprisingly rendering while scrolling through widgets was near perfect.

Then I started using Apex (The one I previously liked the least, dunno why). And for me it suits my needs, app drawer opening speed is instand and it is usable in no time. Rendering through widgets is not that good but I don't use it, and it has a lot of options similar to Nova.

So my recommendation is Apex

If you are havig a doubt I hope I helped :D

Also loving multiling keyboard thanks to C3C0.

The downside of Apex is that the rendering speed when you rotate your device is awfully slow, that's why I changed to Nova for PA. I preferred Apex on regular CFX because I didn't use rotate a lot, but on PA landscape mode is used more often. There's no one right launcher :P.

You're right, rendering while rotated is unacceptable... what now?

Let's write our own launcher :D

I still prefer Nova, you're right that it can get laggy when scrolling in the app drawer but that's mostly when other processes are busy as well.

I couldn't resist the temptation of Jelly Bean any longer and flashed CFX2 last night. As expected it's a bit smoother than ICS, with Nova I whirl through most screens. That's a fix for the rendering issue as well. Typing in browser got improved as well, it's completely not laggy anymore. I hope someone will make a PA for JB that's on par with the current CFX2. Tilal is working on it, but he works on so much :). I kinda miss the PA hybrid mode :).

I agree ... also looking forward to PA on JB. It seems like we are really getting to a quite usable and stable JellyBean for Skate very fast, so I hope we can get the new PA version soon. Until then I'll wait patiently and enjoy the CM9 PA, which is really pleasing me enormously - it even beats the good old feeling I had with MokeeOS.

The only thing I sometimes notice is a bit lag when coming out of sleep mode, and when hitting buttons in say the contacts list. Not sure what's going on with that, but I can live with it for now :)

I just had to join up to say thank you. I was getting a little frustrated with trying to get the last version of the ROM I was using so thought I would give this one a try. All I can say is WOW. For me, battery time has increased by a half, the apps I use most of the time are working more stably. Only thing I haven't got working yet is a video player. Being a newbie, I probably haven't got a setting right. My little girl will have to play games instead of watch peppa pig!

Thank you. And if you are looking for a new rom, try this one!

Also any possibility for the softkeys to only show the "recent apps" key, not home and back? Those are a bit redundant with hardware keys. It's no big deal if it's possible, I can just long press home as well, but a softkey would be nice :). Tried decompiling SystemUI.apk myself but I really don't know what is what in there.

Something new coming up soon ;)

Anyone using gmail widget? Mine seems to have of its own when it comes to updating ans syncing. Anyone with advice?

Also fancy widgets, same story. I used to use Advanced task killer and FW was excluded but widget kept freezing. I rebooted the phone and same story without using any king of task killer...

The e-mail widget does the same, it sometimes doesn't update for hours. But that's not a rom issue, I have the same behaviour on JB. Don't know about FW, you mean the clock sometimes lags behind or the weather doesn't get updated. Ultimate Custom Clock also lags behind sometimes. I think those widgets just have issues with ICS or higher, last update for FW was more than 6 months ago..

Clock and weather gets stuck sometimes in their own time zone :D

UCCW and FW worked really good for me on all GB roms, must be ICS related then...

Thanks a lot for that :). Was one of the only things I didn't like about this rom (that I had to long press menu to get the recent apps screen or that the nav bar and statusbar overlapped). Didn't thank you for that earlier. When I get tired of JB-bugginess I'll definitely put this back on my Skate :).

Hi C3C0

Thanks for all your nice work, I run your cm9 and it is excellent.

I wonder: could you share a recipe for building this ROM on linux ?

Thanks

Use this repository instead of one in the guide.

git://github.com/ParanoidZTE/android.git -b ics

Anyone using pattern lockscreen ? I can't see the bottom row, even with expanded desktop I still can't see half of it...

@C3C0:

thanks!

perhaps you meant:

replace

git clone git://github.com/ColdFusionX/android_device_zte_skate.git -b ics skate

by

git clone git://github.com/ParanoidZTE/android_device_zte_skate.git -b ics skate

(in cm9/device/zte)?

Building the ROM succeeded.

Will want to try it (my last attempt to run own built was a bit of a failure). Note that I build from less standard setup (gentoo as opposed to ubuntu).

have a nice day

Ok here. Must be your dpi settings ...

Attached are my exported paranoid settings.

Thanks, but those settings are a bit too "small" for my taste.

I have such a dilemma. I like JB but Paranoid hasn't been perfected for it, but I want as perfect as can be PA :S I'll have a go of this to see

Same here, I wish PA for JB was brought up to speed. It was my favourite rom on ICS, but at the moment I think JB has exceeded ICS so I'd rather stay on JB... But I'm happy either way, can't have everything :).

@C3C0:

Installing my own built ROM was problematic and recovery subtle (I spare details), but, I certainly do not whine, on the contrary: it is fun ... fwiw, my build setup is a dedicated gentoo 64 bit chroot and most people seem to build on ubuntu. So now I am creating a dedicated 64bit kubuntu chroot on my gentoo machine and will try again from there.

By the way, is it recommended to build android ROM in a 32bit linux? That is: is 64bit discouraged?

thanks!
