Guest Emad Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 I got mine from mobileshop.com back in dec free on the £25 one. And each month I've used up the 100 mins peak and 100 txt messages almost exactly (without ever checking). Marvellous. It also helps that calls in uni to other uni lines are free

Guest Hax Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 Just read this article which states: The biggest seller of SPV phones until the E100 comes out, is Orange, which isn't going to switch to the E100 until it has shifted existing stocks. I'll let you form your own opinions on what this means - personally, I think that it means (as I persopnally have suspected all along!) that O realise that the SPV is inferior to the SPVx (or SPV E100 to give it it's official name) and that no-one in their right mind would buy an SPV if it's to be sold alongside the SPVx - even at a reduced price! Basically, it does (to me) look like O rushed the SPV to market to try and place their own mark on the "smartphone" market. Now, after lots of feedback on various issues (mainly the poor keyboard design and buggy software) they are re-releasing the phone under a new name! Basically, O have used the SPV in a "public beta" form, listened to what was wrong and have now addressed these issues (with the help of HTC - and probably MS too) As for the enhanced display which is present in the SPVx, I suspect that O will have had knowledge about it since well before the launch of the original SPV (probably even had samples before the launch) but have had to wait until now for production quantities to become available. Personally, this doesn't affect me too much - I got my SPV for free, but I am sure that there will be people out there who have paid a considerable amount of money for what at the end of the day turns out to be a beta product. Yes I know that the SPV is a phone well ahead of the competition *and* that phones are being constantly updated. However, it is unusual for one model to be so quickly replaced by it's successor - remember, the SPV wasn't available until the end(ish) of November and O then went and announced the SPVx towards the end of February (24th IIRC). No other mobile phone manufacturer (I know O are just rebadging and box shifting and HTC is the *real* manufacturer) launches a new product and then almost immediately announcs a new version to replace the original. *Most* phones are around for the best part of a year (at least) before their successor is announced. Anyways, just my thoughts - if you got this far through my babble, then well done - that or haven't you anything more interesting to be doing than reading drivel like this? Hax
Guest fraser Posted April 15, 2003 Report Posted April 15, 2003 Well, that's life on the bleeding edge. First-run technology is always risky. Look at the original Sony Playstation, it had many problems. Ever had to turn it upside down to get it to work? It's an evolutionary process.
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Scancom's current prices on SPV.... Note that I have NO connection with scancom.co.uk - I commend them on a regular basis simply as a customer, and I'm a customer because they seem to be cheaper than anyone else. Given the title of this thread - "SPV for £69.99", they DO seem to be cheaper. By as much as £69! Guest fraser Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 I concur, £69.99 is quite expensive! I got mine on Your Plan 200 for £30, two weeks later it was down to £20. It did go back up again. This was from e2save, the first time I'd dealt with them. Very happy with the service I received. They also give £20 for referals. Now, this isn't why I'm posting this, I'm not fishing for cash. However, if you do go with them...give me a shout if you are feeling nice!!
Guest NickB&SPV Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Had mine for nothing but went onto 300 mins a month. Now downgraded. The only snag was having to change my number, but it was a small price to pay for such a great phone.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 £69.99 is RRP. You got it for £30 when the RRp was £149.99 or whatever, imagine what deals people can offer now! P
Guest fraser Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Someone mentioned in another thread today about Oftel limiting the subsidy of each phone, which could raise the price by £40 per phone. This was as of April 1st apparently.
Guest Firaas Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 Someone mentioned in another thread today about Oftel limiting the subsidy of each phone, which could raise the price by £40 per phone. This was as of April 1st apparently. Er... Oftel lowered costs of telephone calls. The network providers chose to lower the subsidy in order to recoup more money to make up for the lower revenue on calls.
Guest Firaas Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 "]You got it for £30 when the RRp was £149.99 or whatever, imagine what deals people can offer now! In an ideal world, this'd be the case. However, Orange retail has to compete with CPW and other independent retailers - the only way they can do this is by keeping the wholesale trade price the same, but lowering the retail RRP. Also, if any price decrease was made to the trade price of the SPV, it would've been made up for by the increased subsidy.
