Root Problems/Questions - Un-requested wipe - What is best solution?

Sorry this will probably seem like a newbie question, guess it is. Have a G300 on Vodafone PAYG here.

I am currently on what came with the phone, which is 885.

I would hope to move up to the final version of GB, but not sure which version this is (is it 892)? Or should I stay with 885?

I am also looking into rooting this phone - but I am not sure if there are any disadvantages?

BUT I have also read of people having problems when they rooted and removed the Vodafone bloatware - that the handset sometimes asks for an "un-requested wipe" and wipes the os back to the default (including all bloatware).

If I am rooting therefore, is it better to root, then use recovery to install a non-Vodafone version of the firmware?

If so, what version?

Are there any Huawei Stock ROMs available?

Tried searching both here and wider but can only seem to come up with manufacturer branded versions.

Atomic mod rom by Tillaz is a Ginger bread custom rom , there is also Paul's modaco custom rom in the pinned threads that is also a Ginger bread based rom.
