The 8.9" Amazon Kindle Fire, previously only available in the US, is now available to purchase in the UK.

Priced at £229 with Special Offers and £239 without in 16GB guise and £259 / £269 respectively for the 32GB version, the larger Kindle Fire is in a segment which is under provided for thus far - tablets bigger than 7" but smaller than 10" and with a high resolution screen - the 8.9" Kindle Fire has a 1920x1200 (254ppi) IPS panel.

The device, which measures 239 mm x 163 mm x 9 mm and weighs 567 grams, also features:

  • Dual-band, dual-antenna MIMO WiFi (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n)
  • microUSB
  • microHDMI
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Gyroscope
  • No GPS
  • Front-facing HD camera
  • Microphone
  • Bluetooth

Unfortunately the UK doesn't get the LTE enabled version found over the pond (yet), but at least this is a start.

The device of course run's Amazon's fork of Android, which means no Play Store - instead you get the Amazon Appstore and their other apps, including the Lovefilm Player, which is a Kindle Fire exclusive. That said, Play Store CAN be installed unofficially without too much trouble. ;)

Are you picking one up? Tempted?
