Exactly my point. 1.0' is equal to 1, but 0.3' is not equal to 0.3, nor 0.33, nor 0.333, nor... repeat ad infinitum.

Since we're all being geeky today, I gather we all know the mathematical proof that girls are evil?

In fact the original proof that 1 = 0.999' is probably a valid proof...

For all intents and purposes the phony number 0.99999' is 1. For example

0.9999' / 3 = 0.33333'

1 / 3 = 0.33333'

QED 0.99999' = 1

If you don't believe these numbers are the same then tell me,

What's 1 - 0.99999'

OK, you bend the rules of maths and English weeeeeeeeell past breaking point...

Take the following well known english phrases:

Girls cost (equal) time and money.

Time is money.

Money is the root of all evil.

Girls = Time * Money

=> Girls = Money * Money

=> Girls = Money^2

=> Girls = (root(Evil)) ^ 2

=> Girls = Evil

Yup I was just arguing with this statement:

I didn't want to write this, but an often-overlooked part of learning fractions whilst at schools is contained here. If 1/3 = 0.3' and 2/3 = 0.6', how come 3/3 = 1, where does that "extra bit " come from?

There is no extra bit.

Aaaaaagh - you sad people! :) Quit the maths discussion - it reminds me of many bored hours spent at school! Do we actually care if 0.9' = 1 - it doesn't exist so what does it matter?! I knew there was no point to maths; do maths professors spend their lives pondering questions like these? I'm worried if they do!

If I do write a calculator, maybe i'll make it display 1 if you enter 0.9' just to annoy you all :wink:

YEP - Sounds like a good solution Dave, or even better - make it BLUESCREEN (with a fatal exception eroor 0x99999R "Maths is not actually a science")!! :)

How about 1+1=1?

see if you can make that one work :)

I'll give you the answer later
