I believe these phones have the same MSM8610 CPU and are similar ZTE Open C / Kis 3 (Beeline Smart2, Moche/MEO Smart A16, ZTE V811W, ZTE V811, Skinny V811, Optus Hop Smart, ZTE Blade M Do you think it would it be possible for me to use this recovery and rom on the ZTE Quest N817 ¿ I also have the SPC for the phone. All I have been able to do is backup the efs, but was unable to backup some of the folders because they are still locked, even tho I entered the SPC into the box. Does anyone know how to root by using the SPC ¿ The rom is missing the SU binary from the data folder. The phone does not have fastboot enabled. It does have FTM mode and I am also able to get the phone into what I think is called Bootloader mode (Holding volume up/down and power. which turns the phone on with a blank black screen) So I am unable to remount to read write with ADB I believe the Bootloader is also locked. Don't expect anything you find here to work on your device and you most definitely shouldn't use Open C Windows flasher. Never even heard of SPC (Service Programming Code?) before this. Apparently it's some CDMA thing. Use 'adb reboot bootloader' to boot to bootloader. Make sure you've installed required drivers (or check udev rules on linux) and see if you have fastboot access. Pressing both vol up/down when powering on will likely boot to qdloader (Qualcomm service mode you need with QPST). It's running an old (and most likely unpatched) Android version. Popular one-click root tools will have no problem with that.

Do you mind if I dig a little deeper in that mind of yours ¿ I was afraid the phones were to different. From reading and tinkering, the phone does not have fastboot or adb in recovery mode. When I type adb reboot bootloader the phone does not go into bootloader but restarts like normal to the home screen. Maybe its something I'm not doing or doing wrong, but when I hold the vol up/down and power buttons, it does go into qdloader mode but abruptly reboots the phone to the home screen when I plug in the USB or if I have the USB plugged in when I boot into qdloader. I am able to see the device manager load ZTE Diagnostics Interface port DFU drivers for the phone in qdloader mode before the phone reboots. Do you Think if I force install qualcomm HS-USB driver it will stop the phone from rebooting. No luck with any of the one-click tools. I read others have not been able to get any of the one-click tools to complete. If I understand it right. Since android has ditched Mass Storage and moved to MTP, I would not be able to mount the phones file system with programs like ext2fsd, which would allow me to -force-write to a Read Only Partition. I did download the kernel from opensourcezte and have an VM android build environment. I really do not know how to program anything except for my remote control, microwave and sound system lol.. But I was able to stumble my way through building some custom rom's for my unsupported p4vzw tablet, Thanks to google fu and shear determination. Would you be able to point me to a layman's write up to build a kernel with an unlocked bootloader ( I believe the bootloader would be built with the kernel -- right? ) If i'm able to do that, I think I should be able to build a custom recovery at the same time. Of course I can only do that after making or editing a device tree. With the phone not rooted I would not be able to use any of the cyanogenmod scripts to pull the files from the phone.. Right?

Fastboot and adb are two completely different things and never work at the same time. Fastboot is a protocol used to communicate with device when booted in bootloader mode. ADB needs device side service running (adbd) and is used when booted in Android/recovery. Stock recoveries never have adb enabled besides for flashing firmware updates (adb sideload). Some carrier branded ZTE devices are known to be locked down. Bootloader is not built with the kernel. There is no source code available to build one (qcom's lk bootloader is open source but we don't know the modifications vendors make). Flashing a 'bad' bootloader is the surest way to permanently brick a device so people don't usually experiment with things like that. There's no point in building anything if there's no way you can get it flashed/booted on your device. Edited August 19, 2016 by KonstaT

Every time QPST connect's with the phone, it reboots. I see I mixed up bootloader with boot.img. Using a program like ext2fsd, I hoped it could be mounted like a usb hard drive, no luck tho. I'll keep trying and will JTAG this thing if I have too. First I'll try building a custom recovery. I don't want to keep taking thread this off topic. Again thank you for clearing up the questions. Open C partition layout has physical partition. You also need to create a custom recovery image (CWM or TWRP) that won't wipe your internal sdcard when factory resetting... Out directory probably counts almost half of that. When you have Android source x 7 on your HDD you'll need to learn some tricks how to save space (repo/git --reference, removing toolchains and other projects you don't need from the manifest, etc). ;) Edited December 18, 2016 by KonstaT
