Plan to force Tesco to update OS

After finding out that the Hudl won't get a significant OS update, I have to fight back my anger every time I see the word Tesco or a fellow android device that probably receives updates.

But then it came to me, I patched two security flaws "MasterKey" and "Fix ID" (highlighted by Bluebox security scanner).

Maybe Tesco didn't think fixing it was necessary or weren't aware, BUT... maybe if we publicise it (bombard tescos twitter and facebook) they might take note, create an "official" patch and maybe even think twice about an actual update. Just a thought.

**I have discovered that there are 2 serious security vulnerabilitys that haven't been fixed in the Tesco Hudl v1 using bluebox security scanner and srt app scanner, they told me to alert the manufacturer. Will there be updates for this? Because the alternative is to root the Hudl (which will stop compatabilty with SkyGo and 4od and other apps) and apply unofficial fixes that I don't trust. Furthermore its noted that newer versions of android have problems patched up, so a fix is needed.**

I'll post the reply if i get it...

Not sure why Tesco would update because of the above.  If you use your device correctly then you won't have a problem.  See the following article:

Everyone should bear in mind that, even though we may want the latest and greatest version of Android on our tablet, this is a budget entry level product and as such probably won't get any significant updates.  Still makes the hudl one of the best value tablets around. :)

Make of this what you will. What is the resolution? (if any). Who knows! I have my opinions but I think its better to wait and see.

LOL good luck with that, the result will be the same as the KitKat query, sweet FA. They're done with this device and have moved onto Hudl 2

Yeah agree, Christmas might be around the corner but any major android updates for the still well loved original hudl are not really going to be on Tesco's road map.

I'd love to be wrong but can't see the financials in Tesco's view for going down that road - it would more likely just result in helpdesk meltdown due to some original hudl android build 'shortcuts' that were discovered when you played with creating custom ROMs.

I asked them to update me on what's going on, here's what they said:

Thank you for your email,

I am sorry but I am unable to give you an update, we passed the information on to the developers as requested.

They do not advise us of what updates they plan to release and we will not be able to provide any further information.

Well, first they said they will have a timescale once there is a resolution, now they've said they don't get updates on what's being released. I'm not saying there won't be an update, but I doubt it.

I agree.   Tesco are unlikely to have any developers working on Hudl1 now.  They'll be prioritising Hudl2. 

 

If you want a department of techs working to maximise your experience after purchase, then you buy an iPad or a Nexus.   They cost a lot more, because they have that developer back-up.   But those premium suppliers don't tolerate custom roms, sideloading and rooting etc.  

 

With the Hudl range, we buy cheap 'commodity tablets' - many of us use tesco points to get them for practically nothing.   Then we hack them mercilessly, we have a lot of fun and they are still perfectly usable devices.    I'm happy with that bargain.

Yeah because I mean the Nexus devices aren't known for rooting, sideloading or customs roms because that isn't tolerated... What's the weather like on your planet?

I think you're misreading my point.    Nexus devices are obviously known for rooting, sideloading and custom roms.   I have an Nexus 7, and I do all of that.   But if I get into a mess or brick it, I have no hope of expecting the OEM to fix it.   Warranty & tech support tends to go out of the window when you start hacking.   Do you see what I mean now?  

 

To obtain the unlock code for the bootloader on my Moto-G phone I had to agree to a disclaimer which abandoned various warranty rights.  It is now rooted and tweaked, and a every boot it displays a bold red-on-white warning notice to the effect of "You chose to tinker, don't come running to us".
